PC pausing frequently

Hi,

I posted a week or so ago about my PSU failing, which I have now replaced with a Tagan TG530-U15 that fixed the problem I was having previously, however I have now got a different problem.

When in windows the makes a slightly louder than the fans volume buzzing sound , and the mouse pointer freezes for about a second. This has been occuring quite frequently, maybe every couple of minutes. I am assuming the whole PC freezes, but am not 100% sure.

I have run Asus PC Probe to monitor the voltages, and they dont seem out of the ordinary, some slight variance on the rails but not a great deal.

The system is:
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
AMD Athlon XP 3200
1.5 GB RAM
2xWD Raptor
1xSamsung Spinpoint 250GB
1xIBM Deskstar 120GB
Sony DVD-RW
Netgear WPN111 Wireless USB Aapter

Is there any other software I can use to monitor the PC, or any other suggestions?

Thanks for anyones help

Don't really know what it is but I can say it doesn't sound like a psu problem to me.

Temps or Spyware.
Check your temps under load.
Spy sweep using Ad-Aware SE + Ewido + Spybot.
Pull up your task manager and see if anything is using your resources.
What Mouse is it. Have you updated the drivers etc. Is it wireless ?

Is that buzzing sound coming from the PSU?? Did you connect the ground pin for the PSU?? I have the same PSU and the buzzing sound dissapeared after I connected the ground pin.

What do you mean by that?
The speakers make a buzzing noise? PC?

I would check your event log (Start -> Run -> eventvwr.msc) for entries at those times.
Updated your sound/mobo etc drivers?

I had this problem not too long ago. I had the problem for about two weeks before the hard drive died. So the problem was basically caused by the hard disk being on its last legs. It may not mean your problem is the hard drive but I'd recommend you back all your stuff up just in case.

Thanks for all the replies, I will try to answer all the questions in one go, but I am at wotk at the moment, gives me something to look at tonight though.

It is very hard to describe the sound, but it comes from the machine itself. Its like a hum, similar to a fan sound it is not loud but it is noticable, compared to the usual sound of the PC running.

I have not connected the ground pin, is this the cable that just has a screw like whole on the end. Where should this be connected?

The mouse is a wireless, and I have just tried changing the batteries, not too sure id it is the mouse.

Hopefully it is not a HDD goind, but I may do some backing up just in case.

Again thank you for your help

Yes!! Doesn't matter where you screw it to just as long as it has contact with the case. Mine is screwed to an empty PCI slot, I actually have a photo of this but don't actually know how to upload them embarressingly...

Just connect it to any part of your case. PCI hole/spare screwhole on mobo tray etc.
It's just to earth it to the case.

I've heard HDD's doing the same - And causing XP to halt... Bu there's usually a score of errors in the event logs when that occurs too.
(Check them first when you get in!)

Thanks everyone,

I have checked the event log, no errors in there.

I have tried screwing the ground pin to the case though, I will see how that goes.
