How much power would a rig like mine use in sleep mode and how much when on but idle? My flat mates are having a hissy fit over me not turning my system off because they think we're gonna get a huge power bill.

Not sure about idle, there are some power calculators on the web if you have a look, might be able to give you an idea of idle wattage.

As for sleep, well its practically nothing. If they cry about that they need to sort their lives out.

i have two quads constantly on and a dual, with about 16 hard disks over all and never costs me more than £40 a month.

Along with all the other gadgets i have running, and we have a tumble dryer!

My system uses about 5W in 'suspend to ram' sleep, and 3W shut down properly. My router uses more power than my PC in sleep mode (7W). My monitor uses 1W in sleep, 30W on, my 42" Tv uses 0.5W in sleep and lots when switched on.

My PC idle usage is about 160W (i7 920 oc to 3.6, HD 4890, 3 HDD, 6GB RAM, loads of LEDs and fans).

Not sure what an oc Q9450 uses but I think the HD5850 is better at idle than even my underclocked idle HD4890 so would imagine it'd be about the same as mine, if not less.

You can pick up a power meter pretty cheaply, although it'd be quite some time until any savings you employ would give you a return.

Might be worth picking up a meter and showing them the watt's used so you can keep the peace. A meter is always handy to have anyway.

Get a power meter of ebay for about a tenner, you can then compare your usage to other stuff around the house and put it in perspective for them.
