PC Power Problems

A friend of mine is having problems with his PC which is baffling to say the least. The specs I am unsure of but I know he has a Ati 9700, 2Gb of Ram and a AMD 3000.
Anyway, upon firing up the PC all the fans Hdd etc spin into action but no post. After a minute or so the PC shuts down by itself. If he switches the power on at the wall socket the PC powers up which obviously it should not.

It all sounds very strange because the PC worked OK this morning only failing this evening when he got home from work. All his conponents are a few years old apart from the mobo which is recent.

Do any of you guys have any ideas what could be causing the problems he is having?

Something could be shorting the board...We've had stuff like this at work.

Try disconnecting things like the cd-rom power / data cables etc. You could try powering the system up out of the case also if he's willing to un-build the system.

If you have another psu handy I guess you could try that, or just re-seat all the current psu connections.

See what happens and post back with some info. Oh and I presume he doesent have a case speaker?

He does have a case speaker and no beeps are coming from it. I too suggested rebuilding the PC components outside his case which he has now taken onboard thanks to your second opinion.

Good good :)

It's just literally to rule out any shorting from the case really.

That and its a tad easier to work with while re-seating components etc :)
