PC powering itself off....

Hi all,
I recently bought the “Ultima Dreadnought” system bundle from OCUK and could do with some advice please.

The system seems to power itself off after a couple of hour’s solid gaming, mainly when playing Civilization 5 or Battlefield Bad Company 2; haven’t had the problem when playing Day of Defeat Source. I’ve had no trouble with the PC being idle / minor use for hours on end.

I usually give the machine 5-10 minutes before powering it back up, as once when I tried after i clicked to login it rebooted itself again. (tried 3 times, same result).

I am thinking the GFX card maybe overheating, however my hardware knowledge is pretty limited so I am looking for help figuring out what the problem is.

Main System spec:
• Intel Core i7 930 2.8 GHz overclocked to 4 GHz
• Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 DDR3 Motherboard
• Corsair XMS3 6GB DDR3 16000MHz Triple Channel
• OcUK Value GeForce GTX 480 1536MB GDDR5
• Antec 902 Ultimate Gaming Case
• Corsair TX 750W ATX SLI Compliant Power Supply
• Windows 7 Premium 64 bit
• Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000 120mm Fan
• Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B CPU Cooler
• Seagate Barracuda 1TD HD

I have used Real Temp to gauge the processor & graphics card temperatures when idle and after an hour gaming on Civ5 (also had media player, msn, Firefox in use at the time).

Idle – http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh108/robm1980/idle.png

In use – http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh108/robm1980/1hourCiv.png

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Rob

maybe try stressing the gpu with summat like furmark and keep an eye on temps to see what happens. also is the gpu fan speeding up accordingly?

Looks like you have lost your overclock, pop into the BIOS, press F12 and you should see a Ocuk Profile load this.

In terms of the ps shutting down, I wonder if it could be something simple as a loose connection on the board.

@RJC whats that a pic of in you sig? sorry for being nosey :p

Fridge plant at one of my sites I look after, was waiting for her to start!!!

Cheers for pointing this out RJC, ill give it a try now, ill wait till tomorrow to have a look around inside to see if anything is loose.

damn, that'll definitely help keep your beer cold!

5c ~ set point, was doing a commissioning some plant at the Green King Brewery in Bury St Edmonds and the workmen used to fill there buckets up with the chilled water to keep there drinks cool (was summer time) :D

Some of the process plant is -48c

not beer while on the job i hope lol

what process in gods name needs to be at -48c in a brewery?!?!

p.s sorry OP for the partial thread hi-jack :(

I'm thinking it possible this could be a PSU issue, maybe PSU overheating and shutting the pc down.

Reason is in my experience:

cpu overheat = insta off
psu overheat = insta off
gfx overheat = artifacts or crash, not insta off

This is assuming a decent PSU with overheat protection that would sense a problem and turn off, not a cheap PSU that would prob keep going and melt itself

EDIT: ps. your cpu and gfx temps look alright

Quick update, had a browse about inside and nothing seems loose.

Played Civ5 earlier and machine died just over an hour in, rebooted and it had reverted back to the default profile without the overclock, changed it back, loaded up Civ5, and within 30 minutes or so it died again and reverted back to the default profile again.

Any more suggestions please?

Been testing quite a bit today, seems to be much more unreliable when the overclocked profile is running....

What kind of temperatures are you getting? It seems as if it is overheating, our profiles are heavily tested before they leave so there is no reason why it should be unstable.

Please get back to me with results and I can assist you further.

If temperature is not the issue, the CPU or RAM may need a slight voltage increase to improve stability. I would have thought that PSU would cope very well with your system unless it's faulty.
