Hi Guys,

I don't make many post, I just prefer to sneak in on threads :D so go easy on me.
My computer has been hacking away my brain, and I've decided to actually put it out there and see if anyone could help me with this.

What it is, the pc powers on, everything powers up, I can hear my HDD's getting power, all the fans are running including the CPU heatsink fan, I can see lights on the MOBO showing that it has power running through it, GFX fan is spinning, but NOTHING is happening.... I don't hear any coded beeps, and nothing appears on the display.

I've tried another monitor.

I've tried reseating ALL hardware(cpu/gfx/ram) that connects directly to the MOBO, with no success.

I decided to boot the PC up after each piece of hardware I took out.
So first of all, I unplugged all peripherals, and DVDROM + HDD's, then took the GFX card out, then tried the ram... this is where I started worrying as I still haven't received any beeps. So I went on to remove the CPU and finally I got a continuous one beeeeeeep. After a moment of relief I decided to take a break from this last night and I've come back to it this evening to see if any beeps where still there, but now I get NOTHING absolutely nothing, no beeps what so ever.

Now I'm confused to what the problem is, I'm thinking the motherboard is either dead, or the CPU is dead, but it can't be as the motherboard is making no sound what so ever now, and I'm also thinking that the PSU might have something to do with.

So I'm going to my dads tonight to nick his PSU and try it out on my motherboard and I'll post the results as soon as I can.

Would greatly appreciate a light of help/experienced advice on what other things I could try/do for the next step.

MANY THANKS!!!!!

thanks for the quick response, as I drove away from home last night i realized I didnt add the specs and the age of my baby.... so here it is

its over 3 years old now, and the specs are as follows:
Asus Striker Extreme Motherboard
Asus 8800GTX 768mb
4GB of OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 ReaperX HPC
Intel CPU Dual Core E5700 3.0GHz LGA775 2MB cache
OCZ Psu... can't remember what one right now will have to take a look when I get home.

I didnt get chance to test my PSU last night.

I've also tried to reset cmos, and I've tried booting up with a different cmos battery in their, as I saw some weird white dust/soot around the cmos battery on the motherboard, but that didn't make any difference.

RJC: I've had a good look at all the pins on the cpu socket, and the cpu itself nothing looks bent or disturbed. Power cables are all in the right place, 8 pin connected for the cpu.

The PC's been working fine for the past 2-3 years, and this happened about 3 months ago, and I've only really started giving it all my might to get it working again, but what happened was that my friend went under the desk to unplug my speakers from the wall, and the PC just randomly turned off, so I turned it back on and basically had the power on, but no beeps or display.

Thanks for you're previous experience this is gonna be usefull when I get home, I'll defo try you're method Solefald.

As for when you said
I ended up pulling everything out of my case and benching it.
when you say "benching it" do you mean take the motherboard out of the tower etc?

I was prepared to order any piece of hardware tonight (most likely buy a new motherboard) as I'm just getting so frustrated, so its handy you've posted here! appreciated.

I left my PC in a ugly state yesterday, everythings out and unplugged, the only thing plugged in is the CPU itself in the mobo. So when you done this method
Take the second stick of ram out then try booting it. If that doesn't work, take the first stick out and replace it with the second stick.
what else did you have plugged in and did you have any other hardware in the mobo or just the ram stick?

Ah thanks for getting back to me mate.

I understand benching now :D infact I've already tried that on this baby to see if their was any shortage from the motherboard. But I'll be doing this again, and with you're method.

I'll be rapeing my dads pc apart after work so I can have some hardware to play with hehe.

Thanks for the information, and I'll be happy to report the outcome.

Never place your mobo on the antistatic cover if your powering it up as some covers are conducive.

Yeh I was thinking this, will probably just place it on the cardboard box it came with, unless you have any other suggestions  ?

Sorry for the long delay in getting a reply to this thread, as I've been having some bad timing mishap's....

I done a large number of tests over the weekend, as I got my pc side by side with my dads that I built for him, its slightly older, and works perfectly fine.

I done you're method solefald, and it unfortunatly didn't get me anywhere, no beeps what so ever.

So with the advantage of a working PC next to me, I tried and tested each piece of hardware accept the PSU and the motherboard, and everything worked smoothly. So I decided to plug my PSU into my dads motherboard and tried and tested ALL the hardware I had, including my dads old hardware, which to my amazement all worked and booted up perfectly fine.

So I stuck my PSU back into my old machine, I then put the hardware back into the motherboard bit-by-bit, after I put in each piece I booted it up see if their was any error codes. Firstly I started with the CPU, and no beeps where made, RAM was then put in and still no sound/beeps where coming out, and then I put my GFX card in which finally I had a beep a long continous beep, I realized I hadn't plugged the powersupply into the gfx card, so I turned of the machine and plugged the power into the GFX card, I booted up the machine, and their was no beeps what so ever, sounds/looks like it was going to be ok until nothing appeared on the screen, and I didnt hear any beeps what so ever, so I'm back to square one......

I personally think its doing POST and thats as far as the motherboard is going, and its not going through its boot sequence(I'm not sure what it does after POST).

Look forward to hearing any response to this, would be greatly appreciated! as this is starting to rack my brains out.

Have you tried using a different, less powerful graphics card, than the one you currently have, in it?

Yeh I tried an old AGP graphics card, cant remember what exactly it was, but it was deffinatly older/less powerful!

GodMac, I have already tried a different CPU in my motherboard and it didn't make any difference, no beep, no display.

Also I think I mentionted that the motherboard is deffinatly POST(ing) OK, as when I put GTX 8800 in the mobo without any powersupply attached to it, it lets out a continous beeeeeeeeeeep noise, so I'm guessing the motherboard recognises there is not enough power going to the GFX card, but when I used an old cheapy graphics card, their was no beeps and no display, but power was running through everything fans where on the lot.

This is last post before I finish work, then I'll try get online later if I can.

Tingle:
The PSU should be fine/compatible for the hardware thats running inside, as it was running for a good 2 years with no problems. But NO, I have yet to try my dads PSU on my MOBO (will try this when I get in)

I kept looking at my LCD Poster over the weekend testing, and unfortunatly some of the lines are missing(I'll get a picture tonight) and the closest thing I can work out what its saying is "CPU INIT" which was common on the LCD Poster, I never really took much notice of this, as it gave me trouble when I first built the machine, but that was overcome quickly.

How could I reset the BIOS without nothing on the screen? I dont know any otherway myself.

andicole0:
Yes the asus striker extreme is a big ******* PAIN! :] I didnt realise you can replace BIOS chips.
