I currently have two problems with my PC(Sony Vaio PCV-RS704)

My usb ports (front and back) and memory card reader no longer work and are not detected by both windows XP and Ubuntu. This happened after I had to reset the cmos settings using a jumper on the motherboard as my PC showed no output on the monitor (with 2 different graphics cards). My usb ports should be connected correctly as they give power to usb devices. Is this easily fixable?

I want to buy a new pc in a month and my vaio has a Pentium 4, 3.4 GHz processor which I would like to remove so I can use it with my new pc but there is a heatsink/fan on top of it with no obvious way of removing it, can most pc's heatsink's be removed?

Thanks, Chris

Run CPUZ and it wil tell you what socket your pc uses for the cpu. For choosing next mobo.
Yes most cpu cooler can be taken off, but never having owned or seen inside of a Sony i can't be 100% sure.

When you say you 'had to reset cmos using a jumper on the motherboard' does that mean your motherboard has a jumper already on the clear cmos pins or did you use a jumper from somewhere else on the board ?
I'm thinking perhaps if you took a jumper from a different location and not put it back correctly (or not put it back at all  ) you may have disabled your usb accidentally.

I switched the jumper to the other setting and then switched it back before starting up, using pcu-z I found out my motherboard make and found out that their are problems with the usb devices on quite a few sony vaio's.
