Hi my friend built himself a pc a few months ago, and it have never been right with random Bsods and files that seem to go corrupt ( with him not being able to run some programs and open files he downloaded )
I have told him for a while to run memtest , which he eventually has done , and has got quite a few errors (100 >> 1000's ) , so i told him to test 1 stick at a time and they are ALL producing errors,, which i find strange , hense my post for help :)
His set up ( the best that he can explain to me ) is :

EVGA SR-X dual processor motherboard
Xeon processors
4 x 8gb ddr3 vengance memory
EVGA nex 1500w psu

he says he is running bios verison 888 0.09 x64 but unable to say which bios.

i am wondering what slots he should be putting the memory in both with the 4 sticks and also what slot he should use to just put 1 slot in to test them ,,as alarm bells are ringing for me when he says all 4 sticks are giving errors when tested one by one.

Here is a pic of his motherboard.

Is the memory installed with the correct voltage and timings, or just stuck in and hoping for the best?

Is he trying different memory slots when testing the memory? It could just be a bad slot.

Presumably any overclocks have been removed while testing?

He says he never changed anything in the bios , which should mean they are running via SPD which should surely be producing no errors ?
The board has not been overclocked , just the gfx cards that came auto overclocked.
is there anyone else here with the same board that can confirm to him what slots the memory should be in, both when running 4 x 8 gb sticks ,, and also when running just 1 stick to test the memory in 1 stick at a time.

thanks

don't those boards support ecc ram? I know the xeons do,could be because of that? unless it is ecc ram your using

I think it support standard ram aswell though

How about go to evga download the pdf owners manual it will tell you which ram and wich slot to use save it to a stick and then youll have it when you need it

Thanks for the advise, but he has the manual and he says that it just says fill the RED slots 1st,, but look at the picture of the MB that i linked.

i am unable to see the pc myself as i am from ireland and he lives in the UK. hense me comming here trying to get advise from someone who has the board.

Your new motherboard has twelve (12) 240-pin slots for DDR3 DIMMs
(ECC or Non ECC). These slots support 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB DDR3
technology. There must be at least one DIMM slot populated in each red
bank to ensure normal operation. Use the following recommendations for
installing DIMMs.

If he has 4xsticks, then it would need 1xstick in a red slot either side of the Cpus, if he is using dual Cpus. Although the manual is`nt very clear.

Thanks ill make sure he has the 4 sticks placed so that 1 is in each bank ( all in a red slot ) so 1 in each bank , with them in that position, and by running of the spd setting ,, surely it should be error free ?

Hi,

I would suggest to go into the BIOS and set up the RAM manually, it can happen that the Auto settings will not work correctly and may occur issues if a wrong voltage or timing is set.

But what slots should he be populating with the quad channel ram, when using dual Cpu`s?

Above and under the RAM slots is printed in white on the PCB the names of the Slots. The Slots that beginn with P0 are related to CPU 0, the ones with P1 to CPU 1. Like stated the red Slots first, if you then use the top ones first or lower ones first do not matter
