Hey all, i've been playin all the ran Turismo, Forza and other console racing games/sims for a long time, and really want to get my head around PC sims more, i've got it narrowed down to:

GTR2
Rfactor
Live For Speed

I wasn't sure which was largely regarded as the better of the three, i would like as much realism as possible and as good-looking as my system can run, the system is:

E6300 C2D @ Stock
EVGA 650i nforce4 motherboard
2GB PC6400
Ati X1950XT 256MB

Hope that helps, any info/thoughts appreciated!

BMW M3 Challenge, GTR, GTR2, GT Legends, rFactor (with Mods), Grand prix 4 (although rFactor with a GP mod is probably better) Grand prix legends (old but very well supported by the Mod community) and Nascar Racing 2003 Season (probably the best Nascar Sim out there, again, very well supported with Mods)

Don't forget GeneRally - I probably spend as much time on this than any of the others! :o

18 Wheels of Steel Haulin' - If like me, your into trucks & trailers!

All of the above run very very well on my A64 3000+, 2.5GB RAM & 7600GS 256MB AGP - you'll be fine.

Thanks guys, i'll see hat I ca do when i get home about getting trials etc. for LFS, GTR2, and 18 Wheels (Played some Arcadey Truck racing game on the PS1 way back when, is the on you speak of arcadey or Simmy? Either way i'll give it a go!)

R124, you mentioned RFactor, with mods, any mods in particular so i can take a look around and see what kind of things are out there :)

Thanks for the help all!

I would never like to be without GPL still my favourite sim.

GTR 2 is a good choice, or GT Legends of you like classic racers.

rFactor is very good, but you have to build the game up yourself hunting down the best add ons and tracks. rfactorcentral.com is a good resource. But you can spend more time testing different mods, cars and tracks than "playing" the game.

Richard Burns rally is another great sim. The hardest I have ever played I think.

It depends what you want to race really, there is something available for just about anything at the moment.

Oh, and get a Logitech G25.

GTR, GTR2, GTL are all made my Simbin and are all based around the same game engine which is very accurate. As mentioned, Legends is very well suited to classic racing, whilst GTR series are modern based.

There is also the 'Race' series that is also made by Simbin. The latest is '07 but the game is quite low key for some reason, although made popular on steam. It's virtually the same as GTR2 but with more cars and more tracks, and slight graphical improvements.

The best thing about these developers is that the games are very well optimised. I have the games running at full graphics at 1280 with 4xaa and 8xaf with 25 cars and it runs at 50fps all of the time (x2 3800, 2gb ram, x1950 pro)

LFS for me, I just don't like the feeling of the cars in the Simbin games. And with rFactor you spend more time trying to find the right mods than actually racing.

There's demos of all 3 you've mentioned I think, give them a try and see which you prefer.

If it's a rally game you're after, then RBR is the only choice really.

im another GT legends fan. i have the same system set up as you and find that legends can go as low as 25 FPS in some areas, not really noticable tho so dont worry about that.

GTR and GTR2 are hard, one mistake and its game over most of the time and when online when someone knocks into you then its very annoying.

However, legends is were the fun is. Even with the slow cars like the mini cooper s its abit more forgiving in the 'cantact' with other cars. Drifting is easier too with the old V8 cars.

good luck

GTL would be my favourite although I play more of GTR2 due to the mods.

Get the Caterhams mod :D pretty sure its available for LFS and rFactor too.

I'd start with LFS.

Beware that as you're coming from console arcade racing games (despite what they try to market themselves as) to very realistic simulation games, you may be a little frustrated to start with, as you'll try to play them like arcade games, with full throttle/brake/steering and find yourself wanting to use the walls to get round the course - which of course won't work.

To get the best out of them, you'll want to play with at the very least a half-decent gamepad (such as an Xbox controller), and ideally, with a decent steering wheel/pedals.

The game pad needs binning tbh, for a racing simulation, a decent FF wheel & pedals is the only way to go.

With regard to rFactor mods, for me, it has to be the F1 "CTDP 2005 1.2" Mod

Add to this mod the Nordschleife 2007 2.0 track,

And your in heaven!

give test drive unlimited a go, its not amazingly realistic but something fun about randomly racing strangers around the streets dodging traffic
