Mates new pc of which he built himself randomly crashes / reboots. Sometimes it can happen as soon as he switches it on other times it can be several hours later. No error messages.

Done memtest. Fine. Hard drive. Fine. No heat issues. PSU tester came up ok.

Not a gaming rig. Office use. Onboard gpu. Cheap psu.

Could it be a faulty cpu or mobo?

Check the Event Viewer and look for any records for the times it shut down when in windows. This may help figure out what the problem is.
Can you also list full specs, saves asking unnecessary questions later.

Done a check in event viewer and it did state drive error but when we put a new hard drive in and began to install windows it crashed again!

Not sure on exact spec. Its an AMD cpu, dual core FM2, 3.9
Biostar mobo matx. 4g DDR3 1066 one stick.

We did reformat too which still didn't fix issue. Even though PSU tester showed no errors could it still be a dodgy PSU?

Why to search miles away ?
Cutoff = power issue. What is responsible for power in this rig ? Cheap PSU. You've got the answer which should be 98% correct ;-)

Yea, i was thinking along those lines.

Even if tested with a PSU tester it could still be the PSU even if it shows no faults? Ta
