Pc randomly reboots

I built my new computer about a week ago and have had a few problems with it, one of the most annoying problems is that it reboots spontaneously. Sometimes it will be ok for 1 day then reboot 2 times the next day.
It gives me no warning or blue screen, and the cpu temps are fine (18 degrees).
I have noticed that it tends to reboot more often when i use my IDE DVDRW from my old pc (Asus 1608p25) like watching films or installing games etc.

My system spec is:

Gigabyte DS3
e6300 OEM
1GB Geil 6400 Ram 800Mhz
HIS 256mb PCI Express gfx card
320Gb Western Digital Cavial SATA HD
Artic freezer 7 Heatsink
Corsair 520w modular powersupply.

Another prob is that my CPU is only displaying 1.6GHz instead of 1.8Ghz in cpu-z, i have disabled the smartstep settings and it still reads 1.6Ghz:(

Thank you for your time.

Hey dude,

Firstly, use Intel TAT (Thermal Analysis Tool) to get the real CPU temperatures ;)

Have you had a look in the system event viewer for a bit more info on the error?
Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer

Also, run memtest86 - it'll test your memory. Run it for 8 passes (takes about 15 minutes per pass) and if it comes up with errors, you've got bad memory :)

Hi, i have downloaded TAT and the temps seem fine still (23 degrees idle, 29 degrees full load) over 5 mins. There is no error report, so i will try memtest and report back later.

BTW can the memory cause the system to just restart without a warning like a blue screen?

Thanks.

I have a similar problem and it's been driving me crazy for a while! :(

I built the following recently and it actually just switches itself off at random or when playing a game it freezes:

MSI RD480 Neo2
AMD X2 3800+
Freezer 64 Pro
2 x 512MB G.Skill ZX
HIS X1900XT
200GB Maxtor SATA HDD
Corsair HX 520W PSU

It runs Orthos on it's own for over 11 hours with no problems and memtest overnight and again no problems. I used to be able to run Orthos and 3DMark at the same time and it would cause a switch off after about 10 minutes but recently it's been running fine with that test so I'm now at a loss as to how to diagnose the problem. I can often run games with no problems for example for an hour or two but occasionally games will freeze after about 10 minutes although I can Alt-TAB most of the time and use Task Manager to End Task the game.

Everything is at stock settings although I've tried various memory settings including 2.5-4-4-8 2T at 2.75v and increasing the CPU voltage by 50mv. Temps are fine too with one core at around 45c and the other at 51c (was using CoreTemp and occasionally NxSensor) when fully loaded and the GPU doesn't go above 70c (using ATI Tray Tool).

I'm getting a DFI Ultra-D soon as I'm hoping the motherboard is causing the problem although I did try a MSI Neo4-F too with the same problems (both were OEM boxed and sourced from the same place so possibly they are dodgy).

I even contacted Corsair about it and they said the problem I'm experiencing doesn't suggest a PSU fault although they would be happy to RMA it if I believed it was the cause of the problems.

I've been getting similar problems though my PC just shuts itself off rather than reboot and I have to turn all power off to the PSU and leave it off for a minute or two. I've RMA'd my PSU to Nanopoint, I just hope that is the problem. PSU is a Tagen 900W.

I had a very similar problem but mine was due to my P4 Prescott 3.2ghz going up to 70degrees  Found out my heatsink wasn't sitting on it properly and the thermal paste was crappy. Refitted and works okay now. Still high temperatures but waiting for new thermal paste delivery and fan.

Hi again, i still have the same problem. I have changed the voltage of my geil ram to +0.3 as easyrider suggested to me, and i thought it had helped as my computer stayed on for about 3 hours, then restarted on its own again.
I have run memtest for 11 hours with no errors, and have checked the temps of my cpu and gfx card, and everything is normal with those.
The ram is set at 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1v 800mhz
The cpu is at 1.86GHz (x7 multiplier)
I haven't touched the gfx card at all.

I have no idea what is causing this random rebooting problem and it's getting on my nerves!
What do you guys think it could be?

Thank you.

You most probably are getting the BSOD but its too fast for you to see

Hmm, i am wondering wether it's the hard drive now as i have just been exited from call of duty 2 with an error that says :'Free 5mb disk space in games folder', my drive is 320gb!
I am a noob at pc building and problem solving so i need your help guys!

Everyone who's having unexpected reboot problems. Please do the following first if you haven't done so.

Go to

Control Panel ---> System ----> Advanced (tab) ----> At 'Start Up and Recovery' click 'Settings' ----> Disable 'Automatically Restart' under 'System Failure'

If your PC reboots due to a Windows failure or due to a hardware fault, RAM, CPU, GPU or due to a software conflict this should allow Windows to tell you what it is that's caused the issue.

If Windows reboots without telling you why it's done it then you've got a potential PSU problem.

Hi, i disabled 'automatically restart under system failure' about a week ago, and it is still happening:( I have looked in the event viewer and i get 2 errors and 1 warning around the time of reboot, one is:
'The kl1 service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.'
The second one is:
'The device Root\LEGACY_TAT\0000 disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.'
And the 3rd WARNING is
'TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts.'

Do these errors play any part in the problem, and if so how do i fix them?

Thanks for the help guys.

If you've disabled automatic restarts, and you still don't get BSOD's, then it's probably a hardware issue, and not a software one.

Are you running the latest BIOS? If not upgrade to it. Also you may want to set the BIOS to default settings to see if the problem persists.

Then reseat all cards/cables/memory. See if that fixes it.
