Pc randomly turns on

Hi all,

really need help before i pull my hair out and drop kick the PC out the window.

so spec,

5950x
MSI x570 ACE
32gb Corsair Dominator PRO
3090 strix
2 980 pros
1200hxi PSU
Case 5000D
10x QL120s
2 commander pros

everything on water, amazing temps and performance.

when the PC is on its runs like a dream every game max FPS and settings, PC runs brilliant also in general use but!

it randomly powers it self on at night or anytime even after full shutdown? checked the usual things wake up lan etc but hasn't made a blind bit of difference.
when it does randomly power up it stays in like a sleep mode, power button does nothing, so i have to switch off by the PSU and then switch it back on and power it the normal way via power button.

note this is a full shutdown and pc turns on.

Now another issue if I knock it, it will freeze or reboot, so I am thinking a short somewhere ?

i have replaced the power supply still the same? I have changed the CPU from 5900x to 5950x still the same! its honestly driving me mad never had a issue like this ever.

so any help or ideas honestly would be amazing, as I am lost now what it come be ? i got a feeling i might need to completely strip it down.

thanks in advance all.

Have you tried enabling ErP in BIOS?
That disables power to things like USB devices possibly trying to wake PC up.

Unless you turn the switch in PSU's back/extension cord/pull the plug from wall, 5V standby is always on.
(which is why it often fails first in cheap PSUs)
That standby power for some control circuitry is what allows power on feature without physically operated switch.
And actually powers the circuitry detecting you pressing power button.

WOW! That’s interesting, I had the same issue for a long, long time. It turned out something went bad in my SSD where the system was installed. I reinstalled Windows on another SSD drive and problem was gone.

Also – what revealed that it was the fault of the SSD. I performed a fresh, clean OS install on that bad SSD, even changed motherboard and it still was randomly causing restarts when on and started the PC if it was off.

Also, At the beginning it was just starting the computer when it was turned off but some months later it began causing random restarts.

Finally, I am far from a computer expert so I don’t know if you have the same thing but those were the symptoms on my computer. Let know if it helps.

ok i will have a look in the bios and see if i can find this setting, cheers for your help! everything so far has been useful information.

(not sure if this will work for you )

when you come back to the machine after its self switched on, right click start button, select powershell admin and click to allow it and a blue command line screen appears

type "powercfg -lastwake" and hit enter

that will tell you what triggered the wake of the machine the last time. Sometimes it'll be like USB device X etc suggesting a mouse click, and other such stuff, which might give a hint as to what woke it.

Another command is "powercfg -requests"

which will report back which processes or programs have put in a request for the machine to wake from sleep to perform an action. Commonly windows update will do this , and sometimes the request will remain there when it doesn't need to be.

If you search google and the like for the what the commands report back, it might be a step for a hint.

I had a similar problem about 20 years ago and it turned out there was some setting in the BIOS that tried to wake the PC up every time the house phone rang (dial up connection back then obviously). It took ages to figure that out.

Those were the days, in the middle of a round of quake and someone picks the bloody phone up and starts dialing out !
