I walked into my front room, to discover that my PC, which I had left in S3 sleep overnight, had somehow turned itself back on.

Anyone got any ideas as to what might cause this?

All I can see from the Event Logs, is this:

Log Name: Application
Source: System Restore
Date: 13/01/2011 03:00:58
Event ID: 8194
Task Category: None
Level: Information
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer:
Description:
Successfully created restore point (Process = C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs; Description = Windows Update).

So, it seems because my PC had updates to install, it created a System Restore point around 3am. But surely that shouldn't be allowed to happen if it is in sleep mode?!

Happens a lot to me. Putting itself to sleep. Waking itself up.

Sentience methinks... skynet has begun....

Windows Update. That's what it does if your computer is just asleep. It does it to me all the time, which used to be a little annoying when it's 3AM and the computer starts next to my head. I just changed the settings and now it does it once a week on a wednesday lunchtime, just in time for me to get back and put it back to sleep after it's done it's thing.

Really wish MS would set a "resleep" command for the updates so it goes back to the state it was in before it started installing updates.:(

Ah yeah. That makes sense. So basically, with updates on, it will update even if it's in sleep. Will test again to make sure it doesn't do it again! Fixed now!

Mine woke up last night to install updates + a restart and shut my virtual machines down in the process!

The other common cause of random wake ups are media centre scheduled tasks.

Although 56k is 20th century, check that the wake-up event for that is disabled too. I had a couple of customers phone my tech support line to say that their computers woke up every time the phone rang due to RJ11 being connected into back of the PC.
