I have an old PC I was playing with linux, but recently the need for a centralised storage that can be accessed on the go has greatly increased.

The pc I am planning of using:

1. Processor: pentium D (think its 2.8GHz)
2. Motherboard: Dell
3. Memory (RAM): 2GB
4. Hard drive(s): 250gb + 1TB
5. Graphics card(s): onboard/Not necessary
6. Power supply (PSU): Dell own brand (want to replace)
7. Case: Dell Demension E520
8. CPU cooler: Dell's
9. Case fans: N/A
10. OS: I have access to windows server, XP, Vista or win 7 so whatever you reckon is best.

While not the most power efficient I don't really have the cash lying around to build a new server from scratch. If possible I will underclock (atoms can handle storage so I know I don't need superfast) to save more power and reduce noise and heat.

The only other things I need is to choose an OS. Would windows server be overkill? I have access to a free copy of windows OS's so can use what ever is thought to be best.
The tasks I want it to do are
1. Centralised storage
2. Attach a printer to it
3. Backups

4. Upgrade with a tv card at a later date.

What do you guys think? Is it worth re-purposing? Will the specc meet my needs? What problems will I likely encounter? Feedback, advice and criticism welcome and needed.

Thanks in advance
