PC rebooting at Windows after new processor

I've recently updated my machine

From Phenom X4 965 to an AMD FX 8320
From noisy stock cooler to CNPS8900 Quiet

I have a Hiper 580w PSu in the box, which has never caused a problem (and may not be the problem now).

When I try to boot into Windows 7, I get a few seconds into the "Starting Windows" splash screen and then the PC reboots. I assumed something softwarey and tried to reinstall the OS but I get the same problem.. the PC reboots after getting to the "Starting Windows" bit of the install procedure.

To complicate matters, I can get into Safe Mode without a problem.

I have spare components and will be spending my weekend swapping bits out to see if I can get into Windows but I was wondering if any of you chaps had seen this kind of behaviour before.

Any suggestions as to what it could be?

Try re-seating your cooler and reapplying thermal paste.
I had this when I didn't seat the cooler down on another build correctly. Kept rebooting because it was overheating.

Thanks Steve, I'll take a look. The machine has been torn apart and rebuilt a few times over the last week or so. Last night, I applied the paste and screwed the cooler down, so it -should- all be in place.

It's running a little hotter than I'd like (around 45 centigrade at the BIOS) but that was with the case apart. I'll crank all the fans up to the max and see if that affects the behaviour.

I would also recommend replacing your hiper-explosive PSU now that you have a high power draw CPU like an FX8320.

The PSU would be a convenient cause and seems logical given the new CPU and chunky fan. I'm just a bit wary of buying some new hardware only to find out it doesn't fix the problem. One of my friends is a bitcoin miner who has a 1300w PSU spare. If he remembers to bring it in, I'll try it on Monday and see.

Thanks for the suggestions.

My mobo is an Asus M5A97, BIOS flashed to ... 2006, I think it was. Well ahead of the minimum (1006) that's required to run this processor.

As I type this, I'm looking (slightly fearfully) at a 1300w PSU that my mate has brought in. I'll give it a shot tonight and see what happens...

Saying that, I've seen various problems over the years that people have incorrectly claimed were definitely PSU related, so my hopes aren't high.

Even if the PSU does fix it, I'm not sure that it'll fit in my case, as it's bloody massive. :)

SOLVED

Okay, so this is now SOLVED, hurrah.

I slapped in the 1300w PSU and it all boots up correctly. Now I just need to find out how much my mate is going to stuff me for the PSU. :)

Thanks for all the help guys, it's much appreciated.
