Hey all!!

When i put a dvd into my DVD or CD drive it boots up and asks me what i want to do, i can access the disc etc, but when I try to play it my pc reboots.

I don't think this is dvd/cd drive related as a reboot also occurs when I turn on my external hard drive (usb 2.0 connection)

I get the following message in both circumstances:

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=11fe78bb-f519-4fcc-be2f-2ae907dca8be&SID=10

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=322205

I can play dvd movies with my media player if the files are on the hard drive, i have no idea how to rectify this.

However, every now and again i will insert a DVD and it will play! However, after a reboot, we're back to automatic rebooting!! Or sometimes i can put in a dvd and it will only recognise it as a blank cd. But most of the time it will cause a reboot.

I have tried:

deleting drive and reinstalling
Turn off auto reboot, which gives me a BSoD and the message

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=8e864e50-48aa-4dd0-b23d-c78b347b8d3e&SID=11

Have bought and installed a new 460w PSU

I have an nvidia gforce 6600 GT which i have uninstalled and reinstalled the latest drivers and have even rolled them back to a more stable version.

I have installed the latest DirectX.

Both drives are set to DMA, and i have Athlon DDR 333mhz (+onboard sound AMD athlon XP2200+ CPU 266mhz) running XP Home SP2

Do you have any idea what could be causing this very annoying problem?

Thanx all!!

Could be a number of things. The best way to problem solve is to use the bare minimum (CPU/memory/gfx) and then add one component at a time, testing all the while until you find the problem component. I'm sure someone here can help you more if you give your full PC spec including manufacturers.

If microsoft are to be believed however then your problem certainly looks to be your vga driver. Have you tried using 'driver cleaner' - deleting all NV stuff and then installing the latest official nvidia driver? Do your games work ok? If so then I doubt its a driver problem as gaming is usually the biggest test for a driver.

Going from what you have said then I would be inclined to test with a different PSU as it sounds like that could be your problem. I know you said you have bought and installed a new '460w' psu (what brand?) but they are quite often faulty when new (I have had 3 faulty new PSU's in the last 3 months!). Did your problems start after installing this new psu? Also if the manufacturer is not of top quality then DO NOT believe the wattage they claim the PSU supplies!

I noticed in your logfile that you have symantec (norton??) and kaspersky running at the same time. I hope these are not both antivirus or firewall programs as they can clash and cause all sorts of problems - best to use one of the other imo (I h8 Norton as its a resource hog!).

Other possible causes:

Heat - pc's can reboot sporadically when they over heat. Check CPU temp in bios.
Memory - Memory faults are probably the biggest cause of BSOD.

Hope this helps.

I had a random resetting random blue screening problem when i put a 7600GT Extreme edition in my second rig.. turned out the 12V line was dropping off when things got too intensive, heavy hard drive activity from a virus scan etc. Stuck in a 500W FPS PSU and it's solid as a rock now..
Incedentally windows did sometimes report that it was my VGA device that was causing the crashes.. again that could be down to power starvation.

You should try another PSU in if you have one. It might just be that there is a slight fault and the 12V rails are not very stable.. Get something like Speedfan, or Everest to watch your volts while doing various things... Both my Enermax Liberty and FPS stay over 12V at all times.. the previous PSU used to sit at 11.6 ish at idle

The problems started a short time after i installed a new 450w PSU (as my 300w failed). But i had installed new dvd player software, so i wasn't sure whether it was a PSU problem. But as so many people were suggesting that the PSU may be a problem, i uninstalled it and fitted yet another new PSU, but the problem persisted. I currently have this model:

460W X-Pro Super Silent PSU MPT460P - 12cm Fan Blue LED

http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=10716

As for adding things one at a time, i did this and even with the bare minimum i still get a reboot. Also, i left the external hard drive plugged in and switched on and when i booted up, i would get to the log on page and it would reboot.

I only run Kaspersky, as i have uninstalled Norton, how do i get rid of the symantec stuff as it shouldn't be there!! Grrrrr!!

Might seem like a daft question, but are you sure you have made all the power connections to the mobo? Also, have you tried switching around the devices on each power rail and spreading them differently? It seems as though when ever a device tries to power up it creates the BSOD.

Is it only IO devices it happens with, eg CD/DVD rom drivers and (external) hard drivers?

w3bbo pretty much gave you the solution.

Strip the PC down to bare minimum and add bits back until the problem reoccurs.

Unplug any case fans or extra hard drives not needed to boot into windows, and so on, testing each time to see if it still happens.

Or you can continue to sit on the forums speculating.... the answer is already there.

If that doesnt work, boot in safe mode and see if it still happens, if safe mode works is defiantely (or most likely) a software problem.
