PC Restarts......should I Upgrade or Re-Build?

Hi Folks,

System has been running fine since built in 2010, it was my 1st build so it does have a special place in my heart:p

But over the last few months I've been having regular random restarts and 99% of the time whilst gaming, no BSOD or crash dumps. Event viewer doesn't provide anything meaningful, just power-kernal 43 which doesn't give the actual problem.

Have done loads of diagnosis to identify the problem (clean install of OS, swapped out HDD, MEM tests, BIOS reset and updates, core temps are good ran prime95 for 12hrs and didn't exceed 60 degs under load). I think the GPU is the culprit (furmark seems to always trigger a restart).

My question to all you helpful people out there is should I simply replace my GPU? or is it time to invest in a new mobo and CPU as well as the GPU? I have a budget of around £400 max (system spec is listed in sig). Many of the parts I think I'm OK in saying are still OK to be reused?

Many Thanks

I would say as above try get your hands on another GPU for testing.

The i7 930 will do you just fine on modern games if you get your self a new GPU. Once you are stable I would overclock the i7 930 (guessing your gonna need a new heatsink?) and adding a newer gpu (r9 280x or 290) will be a lovely little boost and good for a good while longer!

But yer you really do need to find out if the if its the GPU causing you issues or not.

On second thoughts it could the PSU as well?

my old rig had issues with random restarts and is was the psu, if your gfx card is having issues theres usualy definative signs i.e. glitches in 3d games, sometimes get (what i like to call the pink floyd effect :p) random triangula shapes with colour defects. your best bet would be to test both parts.
