apologies if this is in the wrong forum. its been a while.

At the moment I'm using a mac mini running windows 10 with connectify and vpn.

the setup is as follows

core2 duo 2,4ghz
8gb ram
320gb HD
tp link home plugs
tp link wifi router

I live in a block of apartments which only has wifi access so i've used the above kit to make a private wired and wifi network with vpn shared via connectify.

in your opinions would i get better performance by upgrading to a SSD drive or should I consider something like a Beelink S2 N4100 cpu 4gb ram 64gb emmc (with support for sata 2.5 drive)

the SSD for the mac mini is the cheaper option.
the mini pc is much cheaper to run

performance with the mechanical drive is actually ok once its up and running. but the wake up or fresh boot loads are a bit ridiculous.

what do you think I should do?

A mechanical drive or an SSD shouldn’t make any difference in this circumstance - the data is not going to get written to your drive. The ancient CPU lacking pretty much every single instruction set that would accelerate VPN encryption/decryption however is likely more of a problem.

Start with the basics, how fast is the connection available to you without any encryption? This will give us an idea of what will be required to saturate it with encrypted traffic.

the connection is 100/100 up/down
i've done a stress test in the way of 2 amazon streams, 2 mac books playing hd youtube videos and a bunch of ipads and mobile devices either streaming or scrolling content heave pages. speed test via the server machine whist connected to vpn is about 22/22 up/down

And what is the speed without the VPN connected?

2.4ghz, even on an older machine should handle more than 22mbit. My Asus RC-AC3200 with a dual core 1ghz CPU can handle 32mbit using OpenVPN.
