as title. not sure what's causing the problem. i suspect it's software related but only based on it having problems numerous times in psat with virus's ectc.
i have to say a fresh reinstall as well.
i have spent hours trying to speed up a pc, researching what is in task manager,
a/v scans
defrags etc.......
its quicker to backup everything you need and to a reinstall
ok thinking of going for complete fresh install as i can't find anything though will keep trying for the minute.
what should i do to make fresh install as painless as possible? we have 2 drives so hopefully should be make it quick and easy but one of my main concerns is there's currently 4 user accounts and they wont want to have to go through all their settings again if i can avoid it
You'd be surprised how many files and programs you actually don't need, and probably won't even thinkin about reinstalling again once you've done a fresh install. I used to have worries that I've got a hundred programs that I need to backup, but once fresh installed it came down to like 10 or 15 essential programs, the rest I install as and when I need them..
Slow in what way? Try looking in Task Manager for anything hogging CPU and Memory and check out the Event Viewer in Admin Tools within Control Panel for any problems as well. Also worth running msconfig and removing all start up items bar antivirus.
A fresh install should only really be done as a last resort, as there's the rigamore of having to back everything up and reinstall the way you like it.
Which Windows version are you using? How much memory do you have? When did the slowdown become noticeable? What was the last thing you installed? We may be able to help you more with more information.
