Soon i'll have a windows pc again after getting rid of this mac I have.

Anyway, as i've not used one for ages what software (preferably free) do I need these days for all my security needs?

Is avast still fine for anti-virus? And what else do you recommend.

Thanks in advance :)

Its free yes and IMO it's all you need. Yes there are products out there you pay for which provide better update protection, but for me its been faultless and provided me with excellent security.

MSE is a great baseline, and will be more than good enough provided you are sensible and keep your software up to date. It's best to check AV comparatives for whatever is good at the time because some packages fluctuate up and down.

1) Keep software up to date.
2) Don't install Java.
3) Don't disable UAC
4) Use Chrome in interactive plug-in mode.
5) If you must use an anti-virus product, go for Security Essentials. Don't expect it to protect you if you don't follow 1-4.

well if you dont want to pay then i would say MSE

However if you bank with Barclays bank, and you do online banking. Then you will get kaspersky for free.

if you have teh chance to get a free paid antivirus go for it.

i agree with this ..but what do you do if something needs Java ?
