I haven't noticed any recent problems developing, but yesterday I came back to the machine (after it had worked all day) and saw that the mouse had frozen on the desktop, they keyboard was responding but I decided to just reboot the machine.

It booted back to the desktop, seemingly functional, but the mouse was still frozen. I went to the back and unplugged the USB (It is an mx500 logitech).

The machine then shut itself down within about 5secs of that happening, I thought I had tripped a power cable but that isn't the case. The machine will no longer respond to pressing the power button to turn back on.

I have replaced the kettle lead and ensured that the power cable is fully in, it is not the 4 port power adaptor as the monitors were still on standby.

Despite being off, but with a power lead plugged in, shouldnt the network cable port on the back of the motherboard be illuminated as it is connected to the network?

Pressing the power button doesn't start any fans at all;

Has the power switch on the case gone?
Maybe the PSU has died?
The mortherboard has shorted out?

Any ideas, cheers. :(

Start the PC using a screwdriver to jump the 2 pins, unplug the cable and connect the 2 pins the wire is usually connected to, at least you'll know if its the switch, just be careful not to touch anything with that screw driver if it powers up, wouldnt want to break it after getting it to power on.... ;)

It is a lian li case so I can remove the front panel easily, I got at the switch and it seems to click in and out fine so I doubt it is that,

next I followed an online guide to jump start a PSU by shorting the green and one black wire on the ATX cable, I did this after removing all the power leads to components and fans etc so I wouldnt short anything else out.

When I power on the jump started PSU the fans on it start for about 0.5 seconds and then its back to being off again. Is this because there is no load on the PSU or because it shows the PSU is at fault?

...EDIT: I just braved a cd drive, plugging in 1 molex to it, the PSU now boots up and stays running, so I'm concluding its a blown motherboard, unless there is a problem internal to the switch
