I feel like I already know the answer, but I'm just looking for confirmation -

Here is a video of the problem outlined below.

I have an R9 280x in my PC.

When I stress the GPU, be it an intensive game, mining or furmark, after a short while, the PC turns off. At this point, I cannot turn it on.
Then, after one minute, it turns back on again (without me pressing the button).

I have a 750w PSU, and a power meter tells me that my PC never pulls more than 350w from the wall.

At the point that the PC turns off, VRM 1 temps are above 90°C, and VRM 2 temps seem to have stopped registering in GPU-Z altogether.

Question:
Is my problem the GPU? - I think it is, and I think the VRM temperatures in particular are the culprits.

92c VRM wouldn't shut it down, you say you've got a 750w PSU, how old and what make?
Any overclocks? If so, reset everything back to stock.

I'm not so sure, VRMs shouldn't pass 80 or 85 at most, really they should sit around 70c, prolonged use at 90c could damage the PCB and is close to the maximum temperature tolerance.

Its entirely possible that the GPU is shutting its self off as a protection measure.

Furmark has been known to kill GPUs, i cringe every time i see someone use it.

The question is does it shut off in normal gaming or benching?

The thing is, only one of the VRMs temperatures show up, so who knows how hot VRM 2 is getting.

It's an XFX Pro XXX 750w PSU, a year and a half old.

I have an AMD 7950 boost too, and when I remove the 280x and fit the 7950, I get no problems. I only get the shutdowns when using the 280x.

That's my thinking too.

It does shut off in normal gaming too (arkham asylum is the only game tested so far), but it shuts off faster when mining, also as mining loads the card to 99%, it is very consistent.

Whats the make and model number of the GPU? how old is it?

update:
I was convinced it was the 280x that was the problem, as when running my 7950 on it's own i had no problems.

funnily enough after a few days, it started cutting out when running the 7950 alone whilst gaming too!

so i took your advice(s) and bought a new GPU, (850w) and since then i haven't had any forced shutdowns.

The 280x VRMs still runs surprisingly hot though, (97c - 99c) so i think i'll still RMA/DSR it.

If the pc shuts down under load its always psu related. Incidentally my pc shut down a couple of times recently. Did it a few hours earlier as i was playing crysis 3. PSU is going back to the rainforest for a refund and just ordered a 1000W Superflower Platinum from OcuK.

now i know.:)
although my new PSU has a 10 year warranty, so i'm liking that peace of mind :D

Superflower have 5 year warranties but jesus if you manage to keep a PSU warranty for 10 years straight you're getting your monies worth!!

i know! 10 years is ridiculous! it will have cost me £11 per year by the end of the warranty period! (obviously not including electricity cost)
