PC Shuts Down Under Load

Hey guys,

Just put my PC back together after having some issues.

My old Enermax PSU died so I replaced it with a OCZ 650W ZT. PC runs fine until I put it under load of a length of time. Playing games such as Shogun 2 or Battlefield 3 causes the PC to just shut off.

The temps of my CPU and GPU seem to be OK and no higher than they were when I had the Enermax.

I would have thought the PSU should have ample grunt to run the card.

Any ideas on what I can check?

System spec is this

Asus Striker Extream
Intel Q6600
4gb OCZ SLI RAM
Gigabyte 480GTX OC Edition

on top of this I am running 4 fans, keyboard, mouse and joystick plus 4 HDD's

Any help would be fab!

NVM, missed last line of text, have you done a power calculator thing? There's several available online I'd suggest trying one to get a rough idea, and also purchase a cheap power monitor to get the real figure.

Just ran a few of them they suggest 480w PSU would be the minimum needed and 550w is recommended so I am well within that.

will take a gander at the CPU/cables.

the only other PSU I have to hand is a Coolermaster 500W from my wifes PC but I have a feeling that isnt gunna be up to it.

Right had a hunt through the case and everything seems to be OK cable wise.

As for noise everything seems to stay the same apart from the Gfx card fans getting faster. Will listen out for the PSU.

I managed 2.5 hours of constant BF3 without any issues no slow down or anything and then it just shut down.

Not sure what you mean bemaniac, my PSU only has 2 PCI-E cables and both of them are in the card. I could rig up 2 molex cables as an extra PCI-E socket but was under the impression that this isnt a good idea.

Just had a look at the Windows Event log and its Error 41, Kernal Power.

One thing I have just thought of, my Motherboard will not post with 4 sticks of RAM unless I increase the Voltage to it. Will try reducing this down to see if that helps.

CPU temps are at 75c max and GPU temps are hitting 80c max

Will get some loggers on the go to see if they are spiking.

Just been playing some Dawn of War 2 which isnt exactly the most challenging game in the world and it has just done the same thing. Dropped the RAM voltage down to auto and it seems to be happy booting with this.

Cheers will take a look at the CPU tonight, will take the cooler off and reseat it, got a load of thermal paste about so might as well do a proper job lol.

Will report back :)

Cooler is bolted in fine.

Just ran a OCCT PSU Test and the PC lasted 5 min before shut down.

At the time of shut down the CPU was at 100% load and 59c, Gfx card was at 89c and 98% load.

So I dont think its a temp issue.

Is there anyway I can create a log in OCCT to see if there is any voltage spikes?

Think I might have found a cause!

Just ran another PSU test and that seemed to last a long time without fault (yey)
So I thought I would run a GPU test as thats whats being hit more when playing games.

The TMPINO was climbing steadily and I quite the test just before it hit 100c! Could this be the cause of the shut down?

Am I right in thinking thats the NB? I had to remove all the cooling pipes from around there in order to get my old (dead) cpu fan off. So could possibly need resitting.

Checked all the heat sinks on the motherboard and they are fine.

All fans are working fine and all temps seem to be ok.

I managed to sit on Dawn of War 2 for around 4 hours last night without any issues so I thought we might all be good. Until it shut down just as I quit back to windows lol.

I have run a GPU test through OCCT and the 480GTX lasted under 2 min before shut down all temps were as low as before.

Just put in my Wifes 260GTX and its currently running a GPU test and has been stable for about 35 min now. The TMPINO sensor hasnt gone above 85c.

Now the hard part is going to be working out what the issue is, is it the PSU thats not working or my gfx card?

I have a 500w Cooler master PSU I could use to test the 480GTX to see if that also causes a shut down on the GPU test as that would rule out the card.

Although I fear this might be an unfair test as it is the bare min for the card to run.

Any ideas?

The 480 heatsink is new as the card just got back from an rma due to a fan dieing a couple of days after my old PSU lol so only issue would be how they've fit it.

Going to try the card in my bros rig as he is running a 1200w PSU so that should rule out the power issue lol.

What's the best way to lower the clock speed on the gpu?

Right think I have put this to bed.

tested the card in my bro's rig, ran solid as a rock.

Just tested my PSU and Gfx card in my wifes rig (just has 1 HDD and 1 CD drive) runs fine in the stress test.

Put all the gear back in my PC.

With 1 HDD the stress test is stable
With 2 HDD the stress test is stable
With 3 HDD it shuts down under 20 seconds.

From this I am guessing the PSU just isnt producing the goods.

Looks to be sorted guys,

Would appear I have done a school boy error. I daisy chained the SATA cables up to the HDD's (worked fine on my old enermax psu) after giving each HDD a seperate cable it all works fine up to 1000 seconds on the stress test and temps are all within the 40's!

Thanks for all the advice going to rinse some BF3 this afternoon to see if it is stable to game on!
