PC shuts off at windows startup screen please Help!!

Hi All,
i'm having a major issue with my pc at the moment.
abit nf-m2s motherboard
amd 64 cpu
2gb ram
gt8600 graphics card
windows 7 ultimate

when i power up the pc it goes through the bios screens etc... no problem but when it hits the windows starting screen it completely powers off.

so far i've tried a new psu, with and without ram, 1 stick then 2 etc...
also tried a new cpu cooler just incase
i've had whole thing out of the case incase of a short from the case.
i've tried it with a known working hdd and still the same thing happens.
i'm kind of getting the impression its down to processor or motherboard now.

anyone had this problem or can shed any light on this issue then i'm all ears!!

It is a fairly old pc now how long have you had it for?

i've had it a few years to be honest but never had an issue until this happened.

does it do the same in safe mode?
do you have a boot cd you can boot to see if it does the same? eg your windows cd?

if it boots the cd ok its your window setup at fault if it does the same and powers off its a hardware issue

reset bios to defaults make sure no overclock is causing it.

just recently had a laptop do the same thing with an i5 processor. Boots to bios okay but as soon as it hit windows to start it would lock up.

Changed processor and laptop worked fine. suspect it was the onchip GPU that caused the problem.

no matter what option i choose after pressing F8 the pc still shuts off.
tried a boot cd and still got this problem.

Do you have a spare Graphics card? I use a 32MB Radeon 7000 for troubleshooting older PC's. It is a standard PCI card not PCIe or AGP.

not got a spare graphics card but the same thing ahppens with or without the graphics card installed.

i'm pretty much down to motherboard and processor now i think. any idea how to check these?

I would suspect the mobo above the CPU, purely because I have never known an AMD 64 to die except through gross overheating.

The trouble is you will not be able to buy a DDR2 mobo in the new channel, or unlikely.

Second hand is probably best. Below is a possible £100 cheapo upgrade
