Hi All

Just a quick one, I have a generic 500w PSU and Nforce 4 mobo which has been working fine for months. This morning it has started switching off without warning. Had to come to work so couldnt investigate in detail but boot is ok, then a minute or so later it just switched off with no warning, no messages nothing.

Any ideas on where I should start looking for the problem? My gut reaction is PSU but up to now its been fine. And it it has failed why would it boot and last a minute or so?

All advice greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately this is why generic PSUs are so cheap, they are more likely to do this than a decent brand name one. I would consider investing in a decent PSU from a make such as Antec, Seasonic, Tagan, Enermax or Corsair.

In the meantime, monitor your temperatures. What was the system doing just before it turned off?

Sounds like the PSU may be on the way out, try borrowing another one and see if you still get the problem. If this fixes it replace the PSU with a decent quality one ASAP, as p4radox says. I've seen crappy PSU's take a bunch of components with them when the finally die (mobo's, cpu's, drives, graphics cards, etc.). Although sometimes people are lucky.

It's a false economy to buy budget PSU's, not only in terms of reliability, but also better quality ones tend to be more efficient, and so cost you less electricity in the long run, they generally pay for themselves!
