Hi, I need some trouble shooting suggestions please. My PC is shutting down during boot. Longest it has gone is just about to getting into windows. It is a 3 year old build and was working fine until Friday. the light on the mobo (republic of gamers branding) is staying lit but the status LED is going out. It just powers off and shuts down. No warnings or anything.

Not sure how relevant spec is as all has been working Q6600, 8800gtx tri sli, enermax 1000w, 4gb ram

thanks for any suggestions of things to check (have reseated power cables and ram at this stage)

if i leave it a while between attempts it seem to be able to get a little further

Does the BIOS show anything like temps? I know this would cause the PC to shut down without giving you any warning. Might be worthwhile giving it a clean out and re-applying TIM etc.

Haven't been able to get as far as looking at the temps.

I was wondering if the pump on my watercooling has failed. CPU is not overclocked t the moment as I removed the OC a couple of weeks ago when I got a BSOD or 2. Seems to me either PSU fault or cooling fault are most likely.

Depending on the BIOS, it should have an hardware monitoring option that will show you temps.

I wasn't very clear, I meant I haven't been able to spend enough time in the bios to see the hardware monitor before it shuts down (as in to navigate to it through the menu)

Is the cooling an all-in-one unit or a custom water loop? How hard would it be to reseat it all?

thanks deception it is definitely cpu overheat, think the pump motor may be to blame, it's a combined swiftech pump and block

Thats good news. I take it you made it to the desktop without it restarting on you? What are temps sitting at now?

At that stage I managed to stay in bios long enough to get to the hardware monitor, was reaching over 100 in a matter of about 10 secs!

Last night I dug out an old arctic cooling freezer pro I had in the loft and this morning I tore down completely (to remove the backing plate for the water cooler) and rebuilt.

Disaster averted though as when I removed the waterblock it leaked (from the in built pump housing rather than the pipes) all over the floor. No water near components thankfully.

All in good order now! At about 50 but with no overclock. I am upgrading over the coming few weeks and these components will go in my media pc so going to leave it as is for the mo

Wow, that was good timing with the leak (I mean, without getting the PC wet).
