Hey

been looking at a new pc for a long time now and finally got some spare cash to buy it
its not as if im a total idiot with them but am sure there are many ppl on here who know much more than i do!

ive already got a High Def 42 inch, new version of vista, mouse keyboard etc

Have been looking at Q9450,Rampage formula and a 9800 GX2

o yeah im mainly going to be gaming, crysis COD4 etc and watching HD stuff

Any help much appreciated :D

I wouldn't know where to begin with that much cash, it's like giving me finance, i just picked out what i wanted at random :p.

wouldnt go for the 9800 x2 at the mo, price is too steep for what it does.

get an 8800GTX, corsair 620W, Antec p182 case, 4gig gskill pc8000 memory, tuniq tower cooler.

Dunno why people say GTX, does the extra £80 or so justify the very slight extra speed, inadequate cooling for it, not to mention it's an older chip. (Not G92 i don't think?).

The GTS is much better value for money in my opinion, has enough of an advantage over the GT and comes with excellent cooling.

extra memory helps at higher resolutions, agree on the extra power/cooling, but with the money available for the spec i'd go with the GTX and after market cooler.

True, though gotta be careful as GTX's are old technology now, being phased out soonish. The GTS 512mb's are relaltively new. The stock cooler with exhaust is excellent, over clocked i run it at 65% @ like 45C.

A GTX vs. a 3870X2, i'm pretty sure they're around the same price, the X2 is definately faster.

Agreed, like the guy who bought a practically useless £800 keyboard in another thread that looks a bag of balls.

Buying the very top of the range in anything is just borderline excess, regardless of budget, as there's a very steep performance curve. As you near the higher end products, the performance increase is slight, but the price increase is exponentially huge.

See Intel Extreme chipsets for more info. :) ...£600...lol.

sorry forgot to mention ive already bought the case, got a cmstacker 832 in black
As mentioned money isnt really much of a prob but im obviously loathed to pay for parts wich are excessivly expensive with little to show for it

the OcUK GeForce 9800 GX2 1024MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail seems like a good price, probs wont be upgrading for a while so want the newer tech

not sure about mobo or HDD rly, go for a raptor x and a 1TB or 2 500GB etc
Would ppl go DDR3 or stick with DDR2
Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500C5 looks good

can ppl post some full specs for me pls
much appreciated cheers:)

Tom

Heard Ballistix Tracers are awesome RAM, probably what i'd go for if i got the chance again.

Also, not that Raptors are VERY noisy, i'm regretting mine and the difference is questionable, so if you do get them, get a caddy to silence them.

DDR3, may aswell if you got the money, it isn't exactly useless, jsut make sure you get a motherboard with the hghest FSB you can find, because i'm kinda sure faster DDR3 would bottleneck somehow.

I don't see anything wrong with a 9800gx2 (the ocuk one) in this budget. If i set aside this amount to build i would bet one; not only because of the performance increase over an 8800gtx, but also because i wouldn't want to buy a 'top of the range' PC but have a nearly two year old card in it.

wouldnt bother with ddr3 at the moment for the price.

as you want a 9800 GX2, might as well get a decent make so came up with the following as a start point:

That looks very good, although i would suggest an ddr3 board and ddr3 memory as ocuk has it for under 100 atm! :)

Your not making sense.

which bit doesnt makes sense ?

at the end of the day i'll suggest what i think is best for a spec i wont recommend a xxxx gfx card cos its the latest thing if its double the price of one that is only slightly under its spec.

caithomas44:

even for the price i wouldn't go ddr3 tbh, can't see enough to be gained.

interesting to see that price tho.
