A friend of mine wants to replace his ageing PC, so far have come up with this:

Case: Antec 300
CPU: Q9550
HSF: Titan TTC-NK85TZ
Mobo: Gigabtye GA-EP45-DS3P (anything else worth considering?)
RAM: 4GB DDR2 (8500 speed?)
Vid Card: ATI 4870
HDD: Seagate 1TB 7200
DVD: Blu-Ray Reader Optical Drive
PSU: Corsair TX 650W

Intended use is for media serving, some gaming and a repository for his pr0n library :)

Budget: Say around £700

Any comments on the above would be appreciated.

depending on his gaming could swap the 4890 for a 1gb 4870 and up the processor to the Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz, cost rises to £750 ish.

On that budget especially you don't want an Antec 300. Have a look at the CM Centurion or the CM Dominator.

ahh good point i misread it as the 900 so included a Antec 902 Nine Hundred Two, so you could swap it for the Coolermaster CM-690 Dominator to bring the price down for the quad core to around the £700ish mark.

Yeah i'd highly recommend the 955 (AM3) and a 4890 gpu. Excellent price/performance ratio when it comes to gaming. I've got a q9550 and honestly can't fault it, but as people have said skt 775 is going low end whereas AM3 seems to be the sweet spot for future proofing on a budget. In addition to that the 955 is cheaper and on offer at the moment for a very nice price indeed so you'd be mad not to :D
