I am out of touch with all the CPU's and GPU's and i am just wanting to see how much i would need to spend to build a decent PC that can run Sim racing games well without having to run everything on low and have great visuals. I would like to play games like AC, PC2, Automobilista 2 etc.

i was previously playing AC in VR with a Rift S, i7-4790 non k + RX5700 non xt, it was ok for racing alone on lowish settings but racing with other car's there was always some kind of performance issues at some point on every track which killed the vibe for me and was part of the reason i sold my wheel and playseat because my pc wasn't powerful enough to run it as well as I'd have liked and i couldn't go back to playing sims on a flat screen!.

I am now in a better position to be able to upgrade my PC, I will need to do a full new build. I don't have a budget i am just after some advice/opinions on what sort of spec i would need to run these games well with great visuals and how future proof such a build would be.

Was your CPU maxed out when playing these games or just the GPU? A monster GPU may be all you need to play these games in VR.
I've got a 4790K but upgraded from a 780Ti to an asus 3070. Big jump in performance in VR

The answer is unfortunately not that straightforward. Most of the VR driving games have been around for a little while, the implications being that a good deal of them (e.g. AC, iRacing) don't require a lot of resources.
I fired up AC the other day and was getting a solid 80fps using a Rift S with maxed visual settings. I'm currently using a 2070S.

However. ACC in VR is a different ballgame and requires a LOT more horsepower.

So the question is more about what you want to play, as that is going to directly influence the suggested hardware specs.

Another thing to consider is that recent VR headsets are way more demanding on hardware than older ones due to the increased resolution and refresh rates.

I think that cpu will limit you a bit, but gpu will make a bigger difference. I have a 5 year old i7 7700k with a 3080ti and still get fps not far from or similar to those with newer cpus (with a reverb g2). If you're upgrading i think a 5800x/5900x with a 3080 will do you for a few years, but 3080s as you probably know are v hard to get at reasonable prices. 3080ti fe's at mrsp are gettable though. Get 32gb ram.
