PC Squeling

Hey guys

Little bit of a strange issue here my pc appears to be squeling.

Its a lttle strange because it only happens at certian times for example
It makes the noise when the Windows 7 logo is flashing during startup.
It makes the noise when i load up the steam homepage from within the steam client.
Makes it during some games like Mafia 2 but only on the manufacturers videos at the start of the game.
Also sometimes when Windows asks me for admin permission to run or change things.

Possible causes:
Crucial C300 SSD
Corsair VX550watt psu
Nvidia geforce 8800gts coil whine

System spec:
Amd phenom II 965 C3 @ stock
Asus m3n/HD-HDMI
2GB Kingston DDR 2 800 Ram
XFX 8800gts 320MB
Maxtor Diamondmax 21 250GB
Crucial C300 64GB

Let me know what you think

Cheers Regards Ryan

Cheers

I thought that at first but the steam page loading squeling seems to be a little strange.

I did hear that in some cases SDD's can cause PSU's to whine?

Cheers

Likely cause is either GPU or PSU, and it is probably capacitor whine. Pain, but not a lot you can do, unless you fancy tracking down the coil that is whining and put some hot glue on it. Apparently that stops the whine.

You could try forcing vsync in the nVidia control panel, as that is known to reduce it somewhat.

That's probably because you are not accessing your physical HDD as often now, hence the system is quieter, hence you will hear noises you maybe didn't before ;)

Yeah i see what you mean I will need to try and pinpoint the noise it's quite hard to find I just pointed at the SSD because I've read that they can cause the psu to squeal.

Hey guys sorry for the late reply

I have checked Vsync in Nvidia control panel and turning it makes no difference.

However it seems to be when the SSD is being Accessed so i am pointing at the SSD but they can't make noise so maybe it's the PSU?

Let me know what you think

Yeah, it'll be the PSU, and probably not a lot you can do other than try to isolate the offending coil and get some hot glue or similar on it to stop it resonating.

Hey

Thanks

I don't have a spare PSU i can test since my spare died :(

Even if it was wouldn't be worth sending it to Corsair.

I will deal with it until i upgrade my pus later in the year :)

Cheers for the help

Regards Ryan

PSU or GPU- some GPU's does it, it was very popular with GTX2xx series, mine HD5870 does it when Crysis is loading (other couple games) Sometimes during stress test (all previous GPU's did same: HD4870/GTX260/GTX280), nothing to worry about, loads of PSU's GPU's does it and PC don't fail for ages! But it is annoying tho!

Hey

Yeah i know what you mean

I was just a little worried but it's fine ;)

Noise doesn't bother me much because i wear cans on the pc so i don't hear it anyway.

Regards ryan

You could try turning off speedstep in the BIOS which might be listed as C1EST this got rid of a similar noise on my current motherboard.
