Been having problems on boot up for the last few weeks, can't remember exactly when It started as it was only switched on a couple of times during that period.

The main problem is that when the pc is switched on it attempts to load windows using the dvd drive despite the bios being set to load using the hard drive, I have tried several things including changing boot settings in the bios and removing the cable to the dvd drive.

I know it is searching for the dvd drive because of the noise it makes every few seconds this continues on and off for a total of 50 seconds before I get the post beep. With the dvd drive cable disconnected the noise goes but it still takes just as long.

The main specs are:
Windows XP Pro
Asus P5N-E SLI mother board
Intel Q6600

Not come across anything like this in the past so any suggestions would be great as it is very annoying. Usually have to switch the pc on go and make a cuppa and still wait a minute before I can use windows!:D

What takes the most time? Getting to the windows splash screen or from the splash screen to a usable desktop?

As for loading windows from a DVD, just move hard drive to the top of the boot order, disabling anything else.

Getting to the splash screen takes the longest, as per my origional post it should be loading from the hard drive only everything else is disabled in the bios boot up options.

Virus?....now that gets me thinking, did have one about 6 months ago the kids picked one up from a childrens site called Beenie they also infected the laptop at the same time, not sure which one it was but the virus software sorted it....I hope!

A virus would have nothing to do with the POST section of the bootup. Make sure quick boot is enabled, so that it only uses the quick memtest.

It is very odd that it still tries to use the DVD when everything is disable bar the hard drive in the boot order. I have the same board in my sisters pc and it boots up pretty quick so I expect it is down to the BIOS settings.

Also if you are not worried about any of the settings, clearing the cmos would reset everything back to default.

If it takes just as long with the DVD removed, that makes me think it's nothing to do with the DVD drive. 50 seconds before completing POST is very long, normally the majority of your time during boot would be spent loading drivers. This indicates a problem with either your BIOS configuration or faulty hardware. You could try updating your BIOS.

Cleared the cmos only yesterday! Same result.
May try a bios update, I do know there is a later one for this board.

Yeah I did mine a few days ago after noticing there were a few more. My board does have issues, every now and again it won't boot, reboot sorts it.

Like I say, enable the quick boot if it isn't already and disable the logo screen. That way you can see whats going on.

Just found this on the Asus bios update page, might be worth a try as I am running one of those cards.

P5N-E SLI BIOS 1406
Fix it takes long time to show up on screen with certain AMD graphic card when booting up the system.

Their translation not mine!:D

mate had same with a p5n32 mobo, its an issue with the new ati 5*** series cards, as already done a bios flash sorted it for him also
