PC to Linux device with a network cable - how?

I want to talk to a device with Linux on but not through a router.
I can talk to it through the router but things aren't quite right and I want to try it without.
The device only has a network port and so far I haven't been able to make contact.
I'm using a crossover cable so any help appreciated.

This is where I'm falling down.
Going through a router and FTP'ing is easy.
How do I do it from the PC end without a router ?

The box says 10.0.0.97
255.255.255.0

Well it doesn't speak to me :)
On the communications page it now shows the bottom grab but through a router it shows the top grab.
I'm having problems doing a straight PC to Linux box network.

New carpet so I've only just put all my AV gear back.

I'll just tell you what my main problem is.
The Linux device is a satellite receiver and its software is obviously Linux based.
Every month I like to make a backup of the image on the device but for some reason I now can't do it.
I can flash a new image on but I can't then save that image to my PC hard drive.
I can FTP to and from it but no backup image.
The only thing I can see at the moment is to take my router out of the equation and then I'll definitely know the problem is with the device.
I've also used 3 different computers and 3 different versions of the software to talk to it through my router.

I'll try later.
 
I've given up after another 3 hours.
I have followed the instructions to the letter and got nowhere.
The only thing I can think of is that the crossover cable is not a crossover cable.

My dreambox is
10.0.0.97
255.0.0.0
127.1.1.1

so I set my PC network card to the same settings.
re-booted both and both kept their settings but no talking to each other.

I then let XP assign its own IP to the PC which became
192.168.1.105
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1

and then set the Dreambox to those settings with no luck.

As soon as I put them into the router they all work but I still can't backup the image from the dreambox.

Is there anything I can disable on my WRT54GL so it doesn't stop anything from getting through?

It doesn't really matter what they are specifically, so long as the last octet is different and the IP isn't used by any other device on your network.
They could be 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.254, for all it matters. I'd leave out the 127.1.1.1 gateway though, just in case it's an issue.

Stupid bloody question but once I've setup these settings how would you talk to the Dreambox?
I've tried the backup software and FTP'ing but with no luck.

They are different

UPDATE -

I've been to my mates this morning and checked his system out which was working perfectly.
I then put my box on and I can't communicate :(

My linux box is broken:(

Thanks for all your efforts and I have learnt loads of stuff so it hasn't been wasted on me.
