Assuming 2 modern PC's with the ability to add nessesary cards etc to the setup, what would be the fastest link technology between the 2?

Both would have drives capable of shifting around 160-200MB/s and i'd like something that could reliably keep up running between the 2.

While gigabit would seem obvious i'm not sure how well the setup would work and if i'm doing my maths right gigabit lan maxes at 125MB/s.

We have new techs like USB3 and the incoming thunderbolt that exceed this quite easily but i've not seen pc to pc link technology pop up for these yet. I also believe HDMI can be encouraged to tunnel network traffic but again, I haven't seen available end-user products.

To throw a spanner in the works (as i'd guess most folks are going to point towards fiber cards etc) assume 1 is a laptop. I'll take regular desktop options too but the best laptop to PC option would also be fine.

I'm not after throwing stupid money at this but anything up to around £100 is fine. Anyone got any suggestions?

It was more just the use of one machine as anothers disk storage (if needed) without any real bottlenecks. I'm only curious what the best reasonably priced setup would be.

Considering, as said, gigabit is hardly groundbreaking in relation to the speed of even basic sata and with various other peripheral link techs being noticably quicker I assumed there would likely be a slightly quicker, affordable solution.

If we are defending gigabit as the shining pinnacle of pc to pc data transfer i'm assuming a private lan between 2 cards and a crossover cable (assuming the cards weren't auto-sensing which I know most now are) and jumbo frames enabled would be the setup to use?

As i'd think quite a lot of folks on these forums are, i'm not always considering a particular use so much as just the convienience of the tech being able to deliver if needed.

Just to keep any "nit pickers" happy (not being arguementative or nasty there, tongue firmly in cheek) and example use: For the hell of it i've got to transfer my movie library from desktop (4 disk raid 5, would easilly saturate even the most beautifully perfect gigabit setup) to laptop (running a raid-0 pair of decent SSD's, also able to outperform gigabits max speed) which would be around 200GB as quickly as possible. What could we use that would be able to keep up with the transfer rates of both machines? Just accept that each end can happily dish out and recieve more than the 125MB/sec gigabit can handle. What could we use? Even if it's a case of teamed gigabit network links, that's an acceptable response if the software etc can be setup each end.

I am a networking noob. But surely you could install a LAN card that has multiple lan ports install one in both pcs. Then bond multiple LAN Gigabit connections?

I was just looking at the USB computer to computer option. You can get USB2 versions but no USB 3 versions. Not yet anyways.

gigabit link bonding in windows isn't a simple idea as far as i'm aware though. I guess the answer is "gigabits about the best reasonable solution" so fair enough.
