My laptop, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-000-CQ&groupid=959&catid=1828&subcat= , thats the model number but mine has a bigger HD and 2gb more ram, is starting to fall to bit and I reckon its on its last legs as it struggles to play minecraft or kerbal space program and the keyboard and screen are a bit battered.

I currently us a second monitor hooked up to the vga port a lot and I have another monitor here that could replace the laptop screen for a dual monitor set up with a new pc.

I'm not sure about a budget but don't want to spend too much (read about 500 or so max but less would be good) but would like to be able to upgrade later on after I bought the machine.

Most usage is light gaming although leaving open an upgrade that could allow better gaming performance, web browsing and then just general office stuff and programming for school work. I may need to do a bit of basic cad work but my current laptop doesn't grind to a halt with it so it shouldn't be too strenuous on the system.

As already said I have a monitor and won't need an OS or mouse / keyboard.

^^

That's good. Mobo supports Crossfire so in the future if you want a bit more grunt you can add another 7850 and I can see in a years time the price of 7850s to be pretty cheap.

It doesnt run the lanes in sync (x8 & x4). Ideally you want a mobo that does the lanes in sync (x8 &x8). You would need to spend around £100 on the mobo and have atleast a 600W PSU to Xfire a 7850

Offers are pretty good this week.
