Right, after posting a couple of times in the past, and not really getting very far, i'm hoping to get all clued up on this subject.

I have never had a media centre, but i have a few ppl, myself included, that would like one built. Most of these are to be 'space savers' so they would like them hooked up to their TV's, none are for gaming.

Basic spec is a cheap single core a64 micro ATX based system, 1gig ram, large hdd. No overclocking is going to be done, but the PC's need to be quiet. So far i can deal with all of this, no issues, i am no novice at pc building, but i have never actually hooked a PC up to run through a tv.

I was wondering if one of you experts could post a reply in how to connect a computer to a television, preferably with pictures of the cables/sockets that are needed, also, this may be a good topic for a sticky....

Just on a final note, one of the TV's that want a computer attached looks like a no go, as the only sockets i can see on the back are the arial and scart sockets, would there be a way of connecting the pc to a video player and then running that to the tv at all? i really haven't got a clue on this subjet

Many thanks in advance!

if you are looking for a cable from pc to computer i use the tv-out and audio socket from the PC to the video in and left and right audio in. the cable cost me about 5-10 quid.

will have a look to find where i got it from

That'd be cool, but i still have no idea what the sockets look like on the pc or on the tv, please excuse my ignorance :(

If the TV has a scart socket then its fine.

You need to plug one of these into the scart socket:

It has a pair of sockets for left and right channel audio (RCA), and a socket for video (Composite/s-video). You send these signals from your computer with a cable like the one below:

The plugs on the left are the two RCAs (red and white) and the composite/s-video (yellow) to plug into the Scart adapter mentioned above. The plugs on the right go into your computer: the black one goes into the composite/s-video output ('tv-out') socket on your graphics card/mobo, and the yellow one goes into the audio socket on your sound card/mobo.

Of course for your other TVs that have other inputs it'll probably be more straightforward. It also really depends what outputs your graphics cards offer as there are a number of different ways of doing this ...

That has just explained all i need to know, thanks loads! i believe all the other tv's have already got the 3 red/white/yellow, grooooovy... If i wanted just the video and now sound, i suppose i could use the adaptor (if needed) and just the svideo cable? ty ty ty :D

if you check your tv manual and see if the scart socket can accept RGB signal, if it does and you want the best picture possable(with a scart) you would need
RGB to scart lead( £20-£40)

as most good graphics cards come with a hd breakout box(RGB).this is a more expensive way to connect up but if you do a lot of reading off the net ie fourums , this is the best way
hope this helps m8
