Trying to figure out what the problem is with my friends pc.

When I try to boot it, all the fans start up and the hard drive starts up, but there is nothing showing on the monitor and the mouse/keyboard don't come on.

I have no similar hardware to test different parts so it's just guess work.

I've tried booting it with 1 ram stick at a time with no luck.

There are no beep codes.

I'm thinking it's the motherboard?

Any help or suggestions appreciated guys.

What motherboard is it? Can you test with onboard graphics?

If you have a graphics card in there are the PCIE 6 pin cable(s) attached?

I'm not sure of the motherboard. It's a Packard Bell sort of deal, so cheap as chips.

It doesn't have a graphics card so it's already using on-board.

Did you reset the cmos or remove the battery..

Just tried resetting cmos now and still no luck. I haven't removed the battery though... should I or?

Tried both of those and still no luck.

Does it sound like it is the motherboard which is at fault to you?

Thanks for the help gents.

also make sure it actually has a case speaker connected to hear the bios beep codes.

This to start with... surprising how many systems no longer have one fitted

A little more info on the "duff" ? system specs would be helpful

I would have a standby, simple, compatable and known to be working, GPU to hand just to swap in as a tester if poss

Strip it all back to the bare basics ie MB, RAM and known good GPU or onboard graphics if applicable,

No drives or extra frilly bits... you just want to try and get a displayed POST to start with.

Start with the basic wiring and connection checks and work your way up.

It's tedious... but a simple case of elimination to be honest .. instead of making a wild ass guess at GPU or MB. The wrong guess can quite simply be expensive.

I had a Q6600 system that I was going to bin... the only thing wrong with it in the end was a front panel header extension had come slightly apart and was shorting out on the case.

Motherboard or possibly CPU dead would be my guess.

.... more logical that the heatsink is not properly seated and the thermal cut out is kicking in within a few seconds as the CPU overheats

assuming that the system was running ok for sometime before this occured and his friend has not had a go at applying a silly overvoltage.. of course :)

Hello gents

I've stripped it down, tried it with just the basics, tried reseating the CPU, and still no signal no matter which way I try to boot it.

I also tried it with an old 8800GT in it and still no signal.

Would I at least get some kind of error message on screen if the CPU was dead?

My best guess is the motherboard...

What say you?

Ok I've replaced the motherboard with a new one, and this time have a new problem.

Still no display at all on the monitor, the fans spin up 100% which they didn't before, and the Power LED is working which it didn't before.

I'm stumped and frustrated!! Anyone know what it could be?
