yea i read the reg hardware review , it was nice but in my experience the system mechanic swaps your system quite harshly, id rather go with a lighter but still helpful program like TuneUp or Ace Utilities
its the registry clean up and junk file remover that do the most for me as i use defraggler for defrag.
These tune up utilities - paid-for or otherwise - are just snake oil. Computers are so powerful these days that turning off a few services isn't going to make any difference. And I can't believe the author of that article was actually surprised that increasing the RAM in a system with low RAM improved boot times - I thought that would have been pretty obvious.
My recommendation would be to stay away from these tools. Some of them mess with the registry which will cause more problems than it solves if it goes wrong. My suggestion would be to spend the money on RAM instead.
If you insist on tinkering then look at the tools at sysinternals - process explorer and autoruns in particular.
