sorry no suggestion, but we're talking a USB TV receiver for PC, yes?

I had a hauppauge desktop expansion card back in theday and a USB thingy that was absolute trash, so i'll be interested to see if there's any decent options.

yes something for laptop while desktop down for psu repair...so a USB TV receiver i need thanks.

if you intent to be mobile with it, yeah the signal would be bad, but if it's just to use as a TV where there's an aerial socket and want to use it for recording, it probably still has its place.

I dare say your point about catch up TV is valid and the usage of these will be less as a result. might be tough to find anyone with first hand experience.
 
i have both aerial and dish to use on laptop but nothing to plug them into....thus the question...need usb tv dongle.
 
that's more information for someone to help with. freeview or freesat compatible.

there does seem to be an abundance of these things with good reviews on sites like amazon. obviously I can't recommend any from personal experience. I would think the technology is reasonably mature, though there could still be dodgy chinese copies which are prone to failure. if no advice is forthcoming i'd go for something sold by similar reliable retailers

i'm not using mine. not even sure if it works.

Happauge make a freeview HD one, so that's not ancient I wouldn't think. If I wanted to record TV i'd consider getting one but for the thick end of 50 quid, i'll pass

Make sure it's got a DVB-T2 tuner if you want all the available channels - not just for HD channels. Some of the other SD channels are placed on T2 multiplexes as well.

without looking, i'm going to take a punt and guess you'd be more likely to find freeview receivers than freesat. freeview (aerial) is ubiquitous, so it's surely a more flexible option.

I should correct myself about the difficulty of finding a combination analogue, digital receiver

has both analogue and digital for about £52 and DVB-T2 as Benski mentioned

what would you use analogue for anyway? video capture?
