First of, by twink (I dunno how many of you play mmorpgs) I mean by a low level character who has been pimped out with the best gear for his level and the best enchants.

I have been doing a lot of thinking about this and whilest it would be expensive, certainly a lot more expensive then createing a low level twink on a game, I think it would be quite cool.

So What am I talking about here? Well, I am talking building a machine that is about 3-4 years old, maybe going back to the 8 series? (or what ever series of video card that was great back in the day) pimping out with the top of the line processor from that time, having top the line liquid cooling running through it (needs to stable, 24/7 useage) and using the best ram and motherboard with the best case and the best fans. It doesn't matter how many GPUS you use, how much ram you use (as long as its compatible) and how much your processor is clocked at (it just needs to be running 24/7).

I know it would be expensive but is it possible? Is it possible using todays modern cooling deigns and cases with old hardware and have it run even better? Could you make a twink PC that can run games like Crysis, Metro or hell even any of the new games that are coming out with more or less a solid playable speed at high famerates with high graphical options enabled.

Is it possible?

You *could* if you really wanted to, make a Core 2 Quad (QX6800 or similar) tri-SLI 8800GTX fully water cooled system which would still run most games pretty well, however it would indeed be an epic waste of money. You wouldn't get anywhere near the gaming performance of modern PCs even if you threw the best cooling available at it and got the highest overclocks possible with those graphics cards.

If you're really interested in going for such a project I think this was one of the best tri-SLI 775 motherboards:

edit: although from the reviews it didn't seem to offer fantastic CPU overclocking, have a look around for 750i/780i 775 reviews if you want to check what's available, most of them will be pretty hard to find though, not many on the 2nd hand market.

I like the idea of it... but I really think it'll be a huge waste of money as you'll get bored having **** GPU's and SLI 2 good ones :P

A new mid range air cooled system will likely blow it out of the water and cost a similar amount. Plus warranty and be more upgradable.

Now if you were toying with the idea of building a 486 system with a massive 8MB of RAM (daughter board and all), 16bit 1MB graphics (VGA resolutions!!!!), that would be interesting!

Seems like a waste of time, unless you were making a budget build on 2nd hand parts in an attempt to get more for your money, OR you have some weird hobby of collecting old computer parts. :P

I doubt it would be worth doing though really... Well in my opinion anyway. Would be better to just get lower mid range items that are current if this was used as a main computer.

I don't really understand the point of this...

In your 'mmorpg's', you can duel against other people (I assume) and that is how you show off your 'twinked' gear.

Since this is reality, no one is going to be looking at your showcased 'twinked' machine.
