Hi,

I'm looking to purchase a custom build from Overclockers.
Can You please advise on hardware options.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Purchase timeframe

1-4 weeks.

Exact Overall Budget

£4000

What exactly is the build for in terms of use?

  • Gaming, (Fps, Rts & turn based). Resolutions/details etc are probably limited due to existing monitor, (please see peripherals below).
  • Design work, (Sketch-up).
  • Rendering (Vray). Resolutions/details etc are probably limited due to existing monitor, (please see peripherals below).
Preferences

  • Gaming hardware; I’m completely open to whatever is recommended.
  • Design hardware; As I understand, Sketch-up can only utilise a single, (Cpu) core and is not multi-threaded. So high benchmarking single core Cpu performance.
  • Rendering hardware; Vray does utilise multiple Gpu’s but two would be my limit!
  • Display: two monitors.
What are the exact specifications of your current hardware?

  • Win 11 pro 64-bit
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970x 32-Core (3.69GHz)
  • RAM: 64 GB DDR4 @ 1064MHz (15-15-15-36)
  • GPU: 2x NVIDIA RTX 2080Ti 3071MB (Gigabyte)
  • M/B: Asus Rog Strix TRX40-E Gaming
  • Storage: 1863GB Seagate Sata SSD
  • Monitor: LG 27gl850 (2560 x 1440 144Hz) & BenQ XL 2420Z
  • Power supply: 1200w, (I think)?
Do you require peripherals?

  • At a Later date I would update my monitors but this would be in a separate budget.
  • I have been contemplating using my existing Pc as a rendering node for Vray, something I have no experience in... But with this in mind none of the above would be used in the new build.
  • WiFi: not required.

I'd be tempted to just buy a 5090 for your current PC and see how it goes.

You can get much higher single thread CPU without much problem, but even a 9950X would struggle to beat that 32-core CPU in multithread.

Looking at your motherboard I would agree with Tetras and just replace your 2080ti with a 5090 or 5080 of your choise and that will make a huge difference in games and may even help with any gpu based rendering you might do.

I would also get a 4tb m.2 sssd or even 2 of them to help with your V-ray rendering looking at recomendede specs for V-ray.

Maybe upgrade (or overclock) your ram to 3600mhz as yours is only running at 2100mhz as your board supports memory overclocking.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £239.98 (includes delivery: £0.00)

This ^ and leave the one 2080 ti in the system to help with rendering or whatever other tasks you may need it for.

OP, I’d also upgrade your monitors now, the rest of your system is great.

The new Ryzen Threadripper looks great but expensive.

Edit; here are some benchmarks on the new Threadripper lineup https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/amd-ryzen-threadripper-9000-content-creation-review/

Quoted “ For heavily CPU-based applications like CPU Rendering in V-Ray, Blender, or Redshift, or compiling code and scenes for Unreal Engine, the Threadripper 9000 family is even more impressive. The 9980X is the fastest HEDT part ever, outperforming the 7980X by 15-23% and Intel’s top-end 3595X (which we tested in our Threadripper PRO review) by 80% in V-Ray. On the lower-end, the 9960X also performs well, beating Intel’s 2595X by up to 51% in Blender.”
