A friend of mine is doing an upgrade cycle but also planning to move out of his Shinobi XL into an Matx Case in order to reduce the size.
Currently Running:
i5 3570k
8GB Kingston HyperX grey 1600mhz
Corsair H100
MSI Z77A GD65
KFA 2 GTX 680
840 Pro 256gb
2TB WD HDD
Xonar Essence STX
Shinobi XL Case
XFX 750 PSU
The idea is to move to an Matx Case so the motherboard has got to change, and thus CPU too. He is also looking at the GTX 970 for a nice GPU upgrade too. Keep the SSD and HDD as storage solution seems to be fine.
As he is considering 970 SLI, maybe from day 1, the Asus z97 Gene motherboard with dedicated sound card is looking like a good choice to try and keep good audio quality.
Parvum Systems Matx case is looking like a favourite case, possibly with trying to get it with a custom design. (are there suitable dust filters available for this case?)
He was also considering watercooling the cpu and gpu(s) but at around £350 cost do it, i thought it may not provide the silent solution that he is after due to the limited radiator availability in the case. (A second 970 may be better value)
Budget is £1k
