Hi all,

I think my PC is due an upgrade as I am tempted to get a GTX 1070 when it comes out. It is an ageing rig so what do people think I should get? I'm guessing just a cpu and motherboard update would be sufficient?

I currently have:

Intel I7 920
Asus P6T deluxe motherboard
Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 Mhz CL9 XMP
GTX 960

Thanks!

Have you considered going the Xeon 5650 route, considering your board would be perfect for one? It's probably the best 'bang per buck' option. I upgraded my old 920 DO a few months ago to a Xeon and it's been an excellent move.

Ah. Must admit i didn't even realise that I would be able to use the same motherboard seeing as it's so old. Woukd that cpu be good for gaming as that's all I really use it for these days.

Its more than fine, just make sure you update that to the latest bios, I had to purchase a 920 to update my P6T deluxe to get my Xeon X5660 working on it.

Thanks for the advice so far. I think I have a bit more of an itch to upgrade my computer - so will be upgrading to skylake.
How does this look?

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £402.47
(includes shipping: £10.50)

I have all of these parts (+ another 8gb to take RAM to 24gb). It's very good.

How fast is that Xeon?

Mine has sat at @4.2Ghz since I got it about 6 months ago. Normal load temps are mid to high 20 deg C. These chips are utter bargains and so easy to overclock as long as you make sure your BIOS is correct and update if required. A decent Xeon still gives the latest chips a good run for the money at a fraction of the price.

been fiddling about with my overclock and got a ram upgrade.. got the 920 up to 3.97ghz

anything above 4ghz and PC crashes
