Any suggestions would be welcomed!

Can you describe that in more detail? What kind of crash?

Your PC might not be the latest and greatest, but it is still decent and should not be randomly crashing.

Processor AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 3.5GHz 16-Core with SMT

Graphics Card 11GB EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti BLACK EDITION
CPU: I'd get a 5700X3D for gaming, but it is slower than your 3950X in anything heavily multithreaded. You could solve this problem by buying the 5950X or 5900XT instead, except you'd have a less substantial increase in gaming performance.

GPU: a 2080 Ti is still a very strong card by modern standards, so unfortunately a big upgrade (e.g. double the FPS) will be very expensive (in raster, you're looking at e.g. a 7900 XT, XTX or 4080 Super).

Sorry to jump in, not trying to hijack or anything. Hoping my query also assists the OP.

I've a similar spec (2080Ti with 3900XT) and looking at an uprade for better frame rates at 1440p.

I'm considering dropping in a 5700X3D / 5800X3D as my next upgrade before a GPU upgrade. Is this sensible or am I not going to gain much from just upgrading the CPU? Although if I just upgraded the GPU (say to a 7900XT) then would the CPU then become a bottleneck limiting performance gains?

It makes sense, the 5700X3D/5800X3D is still very competitive, have a look at this recent video:

I know everybody hates this answer, but it depends, since every game is different and it would also depend on your settings. Personally, I would want to have a 5700X3D if I did that upgrade, but I'm sure in some graphically demanding games you'll notice a good uplift in performance without one.

Thanks @Tetras. I'm definitely a bit in no man's land, where the best option is a major upgrade to guarantee a massive performnce boost! Might be worth just holding on a year and then upgrading everything (and an excuse to also go 4k).

Yeah, that sounds like a good move, though worth keeping an eye on prices over the next month or two, as I think we'll see some nice deals on the 5700X3D and 7900 XT, 4070 Ti & 4070 Ti Super.

Thank you. Good idea, maybe also if I see a decent 2nd hand offer then I'll reevaluate :)
