PC Upgrade (Now a spec me a £900 PC!)

Sod the OP - things have changed, skip down to post #19 and spec him a £900 PC.

I'm at work and that website has crashed my browser twice now so I can't see what's supported or not.

Either of these two:

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 975 Black Edition "140W Edition" 3.60GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-286-AM&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1943

AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1100T Black Edition 3.30GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail [HDE00ZFBGRBOX]
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-277-AM&tool=3

Or better off upgrading else where?

Would either of those CPU's work?

I've managed to get onto the website now and it says AM3 and Phenom II support but not sure about the Quad or Six cores?

Thanks

What would the 'best' CPU he could fit into that motherboard? I take it the Six core wouldn't work either then?

He plays Football Manager loads which uses loads of RAM and CPU but no graphics really, usual stuff though, internet, Office etc....

He's always got loads of things going on at the same time (encoding, Football Manager, office, internet, using his TV as a second monitor to watch stuff etc...) so just want to make things run as quick and smooth as possible.

No plan to OC at all, he use to be into all that (as did I) but he'd just rather leave it as standard and not have to faff about or worry about temps etc.

What are these 6 core CPU's like?

So we recon THIS CPU would work and be a pretty good increase?

Your friend might have to upgrade his bios to get a x6 to work in his mobo btw

Well it would be me doing the upgrade for him, he doesn't have time to do stuff like that anymore!

I assume it's like the old days, copy files to a Floppy/USB and boot and let it flash or run a program from Windows and it flashes and works?

He's happy to spend that much, my understanding is that if he had 6 programs wouldn't each 1 use a core? If not can he spend £100 on a CPU and maybe £50 and get a bit of a graphics card upgrade for the future?

I spoke to him and he's sorta set himself up for a big upgrade now. He likes his current PC but the money is available and he'd like the new kit. His son will have his current system.

I asked him how much and he said just under £900, this would need to include a really nice monitor (24")

So basically he is looking for the following for just under £900

23/24" monitor
CPU
Mobo
Coolermaster Elite 342 case
Graphics Card
RAM
OS HDD
Samsung SH-S223C/BEBE 22x
PSU

The case is £25~ and the DVD drive is £15~ and the monitor he likes is the E2407HDS for £160~ or failing that the E2409HDS for £150 so that leaves us with about £700 to get CPU, Mobo, RAM, OS HDD (He will keep his 2TB for storage), Graphics Card and PSU.

He wants it to last a good while yet (consider it's a £900 PC!) so maybe take into account he probably will pick up a few games over the next few years.

Nice to get an end of financial year bonus and treat yourself to a £900 new PC eh!?

Thanks

Won't be OC'ing at all, I'm sure £2 over would be fine!

He's seen my Coolermaster 342 case and loves it so he'll save the money and get one of those if possible?

Only 4GB of RAM? I know it's quicker than his current stuff but surely for an extra £40 (he'll be saving what £20 on the case) he should get 8GB?

He's really not into that anymore, just likes a PC to work and be quick. Not into messing about in the BIOS, looking into temps, voltages etc....

With that in mind what is the best spec he can get for the £900, SSD is probably ideal as he has a 2TB for files, 342 for case, USB3.0 on the motherboard would be good as well.

Looks brilliant, the only thing I'm thinking just looking down is his gaming is nowt at the moment (bar Football Manager) and in the future he might pick up a few here and there, but would it be better at the moment say by spending £120~ on a graphics card and getting a better CPU, or is it not really worth it?

Honest question as at this end of the market I don't know if an extra £75 on a CPU would make much difference?

That's fine, was just looking at other options/getting to best for him.

I assume for the money he is paying he is getting a brilliant machine that should last a while and say in a few years he would be able to spend a little bit and upgrade a bit?

Anything else I'm forgetting and overlooking?

Monitor a good one?

Appreciate the help, unless anyone can better than spec before order time at some point tomorrow I think I'll go for it.

Side note: His current PC has a 512mb ATi Graphics card of some sort, about a year old and was about £50 when new. His son won't need this so is it best to just flog it, keep it as a 'spare' or can it be put into this new PC for some reason (I've no idea, run another monitor, make it even better, etc....)

Edit: It's a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4670 Ultimate "Passive" 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail

2nd Side note: What's CF?

Just building this now, one issue.

I've got this tiny SSD drive that and no where in my case to mount it. Tiny screw holes and the screws that came with the motherboard don't fit easily. The instructions for the drive only mention installing into a notebook....
