Wasnt sure where to put this but seeing as its more towards the photography side I thought here would be best.

I built my current system about 4yrs ago now and other than a slow down on start up I've not really had any issues with its speed it still runs everything super quick with no need of an clocks.

That was until I upgraded to Lightrooom 4.1 last week now I know there are reports of some lag with the sliders but I'm about 5 clicks of the mouse ahead of the PC and always waiting for it to catch up, cash is a little tight for a couple of months so I was thinking just to double my RAM for now and maybe a small SSD for boot and lightroom in a couple of months, current spec as follows:

Vista 64 Home premium
Intel E8500
Asus Rampage MB
4GB of Corsair RAM
HD4870 1GB gfx card
2x 500gb Seagate Barracuda 32mb HDD 1x boot and 1 x backup

RAM is Corsair CM2x2048-6400C4DHX 800mhz 2.1v 4-4-4-12 was gonna get another identical 4GB but cant find this RAM anywhere?

What would your suggestions be? to speed up Lightroom is the only need for this upgrade.

Thanks

Before you do anything I would do a fresh install of windows, surprising how that can help speed things up again

You may think that spec is 'super quick', but it really isn't tbh.

Put it this way: My 3.46Ghz 6-core 16GB + SSD Mac Pro lags in LR sometimes :p

However, more memory and an SSD for boot + lightroom *library + cache* will speed things up no end.

Overclocking the CPU will also help. From what I remember the E8500 wasn't a bad clocker. Easily get 10% out of it.

Cheers both, concorde I'll rephrase if you dont mind haha 'acceptably quick' would probably be better fitted, as I said I dont notice any slowdown on anything else I use so building a new setup for Lightroom would be insanely difficult to get past the wife lol which order would you upgrade SSD first or memory?

Excellent as I suspected thanks, Ive been out of the loop for a while how does the RAM I have hold up is it worth me seeing if I can match what I've got from the bay or buy a fresh 8gb of matching RAM? any reccomendation?

To be honest, as your not pushing the realms of tech, anything that reasonably matches your current memory would be fine.

You need the same speed and same timings (E.g. 5-5-5-15).

For ease 2x4Gb would be the ideal choice. Depends on price tbh.

lightroom doesnt seem to use too much memory (at least 2 and 3 didnt, im assuming 4 is the same).

biggest issue i found when editing 5dmk2 files was CPU usage.

Agreed.
I've found it slower since moving to Ver4 so have been leaving task manager open. Only have Lightroom open but the memory rarely goes much above 3Gb usage, but several operations pound the CPU. Export is the worst too.

Machine is a laptop with a dual core i5 - hyper threading to 4 cores and 6Gb RAM.

I changed the disk to one of the hybrid drives but to be honest didn't notice a huge difference.

My Lightroom here is currently sitting at 5GB after a 8GB 7D import, 1:1 render + a few bits of developing. I've seen it use more when I've been using it more heavily.

All apps will use as much as possible if you have it.
