Pc upscaling to 4k from 1080p

Looking to get a 4k tv. My current gpu 780ti wont cut the mustard running native 4k. So I was going to set the game res to 1080p and let the tv upscale to 4k.

Is this correct, does it work?

It will work. The tv will scale the image to fit the screen and it should look fine.
