Generally speaking, used parts are cheap but add some risk (shorter/no warranty) and new parts are more expensive with no risk + higher resale value.

I was wondering, if you were to make a budget build, which parts would be second hand and which ones would be new?

Used Gpu
Certain Psu manufacturers have huge warranties so they could be used
Non K series intel cpus as they wont of been overclocked
I had no trouble with used motherboards

Interesting question, there are some parts I'd never buy used but some I would still buy for a £1k build just for much better value

Yes

-GPU
-CPU
-RAM
-Fans
-PSU
-DVD drive (:p)
-Case if in good condition

Definitely not

-SSD and HDD (storage)
-Cooler for CPU
-Motherboard

Not sure why you wouldn't buy a 'b' grade cooler. Not really much that can go wrong with a cooler apart from the fan failing. Different story if it is an AIO.

I'd probably only avoid second hand storage and possibly a PSU.

Running a second hand 780 at the moment with a 2nd hand waterblock. Had absolutely no problems. Also thinking of when it comes time to upgrade the CPU, I'll go 2nd hand on that as very few intel CPUs die after they have been worn in.

Aslong as you get secondhand parts from a place you trust (and will deliver quality working units) you'll be fine.

I love the MM on OCUK as everything i have bought from there has been fantastic. :)

The only part of the my current PC which is new is the RAM, HDD,OD (carried over from old build as new) and my CPU cooler (Birthday present).

I'm personally being a 2nd PC for the misses so she can game with me. Plan to get a new Case/PSU/SSD since these parts I can take along for a long time, then get everything else used, and maybe a refurb h100i unit from OCUK, should be able to get something very cable for much cheaper, just waiting for 8xx GPUs to drop so I can get a cheaper 770 (She also wants OSX on it so can't go AMD).

I've had no problem with second hand GPUs in the past, but I suppose it only takes one time to put you off for life.

Bought second hand CPU coolers too - not much to go wrong with a chunk of metal!

I suppose it's alright buying a used CPU cooler, the thing that puts me off is that CPU coolers are quite cheap in relation to other parts, and if 1 screw is missing from the used part seller or something it's just a hassle that you don't need - could pay like £15 more and get a new one with guaranteed all screws and fittings you need etc (not always the case, but generally you'll get everything in-box)

For my own budget build, I used 2nd hand CPU and GPU (£12 and £21 respectively), and new everything else. Though the cooler was a bargain end of life Xigmatek Thors Hammer for £16 new.

Motherboards for current sockets don't seem much cheaper used than new, PSU seemed a good idea to go new, as did HDD. Memory is barely cheaper used.

I bought a used HDD from the MM as a backup drive.
