PC using 802.11G despite having a 802.11N capable router and adapter, and wifi dropouts.

Hello everyone, as it says, I found using task manager that my PC was using 802.11g despite that it should be able to. My Laptop, phone and mac all use 'N' and the router is capable of outputting both g and n (netgear WNR2200). When I check the device manager for my adapter (Asus N10 b/g/n) there aren't any properties to change to n specifically

, only: b, b or g, b or g or n. I have the last one selected and for whatever reason my pc uses g not n.

I have the router firmware updated and the drivers are all up to date.

The only thing the ethernet cable stopped is the frequent drop outs I would experience on wifi - perhaps playing GTA 5 online then I would lose connection to teamspeak and the server. This would happen anywhere from 1 - 6 times in 2 hours. All other internet devices in the house never experience this so it can't be the router. This is the second of the same adapter as I thought the first one was faulty because of extremely high ping and packet loss but that still happens occasionally on this adapter (this could be at peak times in the neighbourhood or may be a faulty router?)

I have run speedtests and on wifi I get 22Mbps and on ethernet I get 37 with a ping of 14ms. This is similar to other computers in the house.

So what I want to know is if there is a way to move to 802.11n on my computer, and if it would provide any sort of upgrade; why the wifi drops out for my pc completely sometimes; why sometimes the connection is lost to many different servers (eg Teamspeak and GTA at the same time) but the wifi is still "connected"; is there a need to upgrade my router or adapter?

Your pics didn't work as you're using the wrong links. Correct ones here:

I have played with that router and I remember there are settings somewhere to set the wireless mode to either g and/or n, might be worth checking there just in case. Honestly though it's not a very good router.

Not really sure what else could be causing your wireless to only stick with g.

If you live in an area with loads of wireless networks around, this can cause a lot of interference and will sometimes make your own connection to your wireless network unstable, especially during peak times.

Is this the wireless adapter?: https://www.asus.com/uk/Networking/USBN10/

Because honestly at that size, the antennas must be tiny and if your desktop is under a desk or something, it won't get a good signal. A PCIe one would be better.

Why not just stick with ethernet seeing as you already tried that? It's far more faster and stable, as well as lower latency compared to wireless and recommended to use for gaming.

EDIT: Forgot to ask, what speed does Windows report the wireless to be connected at?

Yep that's the adapter. Can't use Ethernet all the time because it means running the wire down through the house which is a pain.

the antennae in your laptop are probably 20-30 cm long,
a 5cm usb wifi wont cut it
try an usb extension move it around a bit see if it improve or buy a better wifi adapter

Could you recommend an adapter?( Take into account my router I don't think does 5ghz)
Would I want A PCIe adapter? Surely that would receive more interference from the case itself? Or do I want a USB adapter with bigger anntennae, bearing in mind I think my computer has USB 1.0 at the front and 2.0 at the back

The chances of a computer having USB 1 is extremely low, they would be 2 unless you have an ancient PC.

PCIe adapters have external antennas so they won't be affected by the case.

Any of these will do the job, it depends on how much you're willing to spend: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/peri...an/wireless-lan/adapter-cards?sPage=1&sSort=3

Another alternative, have you tried powerlines?: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/peri...less-lan/powerline-networking?sPage=1&sSort=3

They use the electrical mains to connect your PC to the router, so it's like ethernet but more tidy.
