looking for VR specific, how much VRAM do you need going forward ?

i game at 2K, so 16Gb would be ok, but what about VR ?

is 16Gb going to be enough to run games in VR with like the highest or close to high settings ?

i hear No Mans Sky needs more than 16Gb (as an example)

Thoughts ?

Thanks

i was originally thinking of buying a 5080, but because i use VR, I'm not sure 16Gb will be enough to get the most out of it

i currently use a 3090 which has 24Gb VRAM

@Ravenger should be able to tell me, as he has most games and a 4090

I've seen modded Skyrim VR go above 11gb. I imagine if you went to 4k textures and very high resolution rendering that could go above 16gb.

One things for certain, I've never regretted paying the extra for the 4090 as I've never had to worry about running out of VRAM, and the card hardly gets stressed. The most taxing VR games seem to be CPU limited.

do you need 4K textures on a quest 3 ? is it possible?

well in sim racing yeah, i just think the visuals are a bit 780p a lot of the time lol
hoping to get the new assesto corsa evo

I've been gaming solely in VR for many years and I can say you don't want to be dropping textures down too far otherwise the clarity suffers bad in VR. I have a quest3/3080ti and mainly play DCS/AH-64 atm and have to have the textures on low to prevent terrible stuttering due to the VRAM being exhausted. I was aiming for a 5080 until I found out it had 16GB of VRAM. I'm now going to bite the bullet and try to get a 5090 with the view of keeping it a year or so longer than I would have with a 5080, probably 4 years plus.

how can i test VRAM in VR ?
i dropped Virtual desktop down to a 3080 level last night for racing, and no stutter

i need to be sure If i need a card with more VRAM than 16Gb or not, otherwise ill get a 5080 on launch day

Not sure how you're going to be 100% sure.. given there could be other games / mods that use more memory ..

If you're just talking about AMS2 then I doubt you'll need more than 16gb..

in my post just yeah i was talking about AMS2, but i also do other PCVR titles

I think you will hit limits with 16GB, Nvidia talk about further memory compression in the 5000 series/DLSS4 etc but you basically want to chuck as much raw grunt and resources as you can at PCVR to get the most out of it.

When the Apache module for DCS came out (years ago now) the 'high' textures setting made anything under 16GB grind to an unusable halt in VR.

IMHO a 4090 will still out perform a 5080 in VR never mind the 5070 nonsense Jensen was spouting earlier in the week.

Thats my thoughts , 16gb is too low , maybe I'll wait for the 24gb version or get a 4090

4090 at £1200 is a steal, the price has jumped cos the 5000 series is offering marginal gains.

5090 minus 30% is what 1.4k and that is before shipping an taxes... basically the 5090 is no better value than a 4090 it nets you more performance at a higher price

lower price ?
