PC vs the consoles

and that will be loads better than my ps3 and a 50" tv?

Depends if your 50" tv can handle a 1080p input from pc, in theory your tv will never get a better rest than 1080p as they don't make them yet  but the pc could have better gfx than the ps3 if you spec it high enough and you would be able to play pc games on your 50".

indeed :D one thing the consoles will never have :D ching ching, 10 awesome games for less then the retail of 1 console game, hell yeah!, just make sure you got enough storage and fast internetz :p

yes, games will have more detail in them, lots more, graphics are miles better on pc, console graphics are roughly 3-4 generations old now, ( think about Geforce 7900gtx)

also, spend nice money on a top end monitor, say a 30" from dell or HP and 1080p? pffffft 2560x1440, proper HD gaming ;)
no console or tv supports that :p

how much will that set me back

30" monitor - at least 700 quid
For the latest games chances are you'll need at least tri sli 460 to run max settings at max resolution, so another 400 for 2 more cards? :p

towards the upper limits of pc gaming the money does get very silly indeed, the above price don't include the power supply you will need to feed those cards, and 3d gaming will cost even more lol

I too sold my xbox360 but I'd never sell my PS3 even though I did consider it...

I found a use for my PS3 as a pretty damn good media playback device. And with GT5 now out on PS3 i've not used my PC for gaming for a past week or so, but I'll go back to PC gaming - I always do...

I always think the combination of PS3 and a decent PC gaming rig pretty much has all areas of PC and media playback fairly well covered if you ask me.

PC gaming does do a lot more then a PS3 but the PS3 does have some damn fine exclusives and i'm not going to miss out just because my gaming PC can play games with more AA and at native 1920 x 1080...

I think there is room for both console and PC - but thats just me.

i have 6 ps3 at the mo as was gonna buy fix and sell them, but i dont think there is that much money in it so i'm gonna give a couple as xmas presents. i'd never sell all of them though even as bluray plays they are worth it.

pc's are superior at playing games to a console, despite this, console gaming is more popular, game houses are far more numerous for the consoles, hence why you get so many exclusives, where the PC will rarely see one that isn't WOW or something similar lol

Stalker Call of Pripyat, Civilization 5, Starcraft 2, Football manager 2011, ArmA II: Operation Arrowhead and Amnesia are all wow like games right? pc gamers need to stop whining and buy some games instead. All xbox 360 got in 2010 was halo reach and alan wake. who is lacking exclusives?

Stupid monitor/TV comparisons have been rebuffed countless times. Why can't people understand that it's just as easy to hook a PC up to a TV? Consoles have noting in this department. I've also yet to find a game that I can't run well on max settings on my 4890, and that cost me £200 more than a year ago. Besides, medium settings on recent cross-platform titles are almost uniformly superior to console graphics, assuming that the developer's actually given some time to tweaking PC versions. If they haven't, that's more a fault with consoles than PCs.

Is this an attempt to troll?

Last time I checked a single overclocked GTX 460 ran anything but Metro 2033 maxed.

And where are you finding these 460s for 200? Do you live in the US? The 768s are around £100 and the 1024 can be found for under £130.

Also they can't TRI sli

The only department a console beats PC in is local multiplayer.

And it would be cheaper for a short amount of time since a 360/ps3 cost like £200/250? A decent gaming PC with a GTX 460 or something could cost £300.

So although you're saving £100/50 on the initial purchase, you won't be saving massive money on games, coz as Seraph said, getting 10 pc games for the price of 1 console game is awsum.

People I've talked about this with are usually sorta iggnorant and think you can't plug in a PC to a TV and you're not allowed to plug in a 360 controller and use that instead of kb/mouse.

There are some genres you can't even play on consoles because of the controls, for example, Starcraft 2. A PC exclusive, would be impossible to play on anywhere near the same level you could with a kb/mouse.

Another example of PC having better controls is that even in FPS, consoles will include massive aim assist in games because lolcontroller. I noticed this while playing reach recentley with some friends that the aim assist was insane compared to what I get on any PC FPS.

Anyway I gtg now

Certain games are better on consoles, but FPS' should remain on the PC.

I was browsing the Xbox 360 store last night and came across FF:11, i didn't think consoles had MMO's yet?

Fully customisable, constantly updated hardware vs hardware that was fixed a couple of years ago.

Consoles should be more user friendly though (and have less bugs presumably?)

I personally think theirs a purpose for consoles and gaming on pc. I have a wii and PS3 including my PC. I wouldn't exactly call my pc a gaming pc despite it being fully capable. I don't play shooters or whatever you call them, but I am into strategy games and simulator type "games" on pc. Consoles just don't cut it in these departments. Im on my 3rd PS3 having sold the past 2 because I felt it wasn't getting the air time it warranted to keep it, but each time within a few months Ive bought another one. The wii isn't to be taken seriously for "gaming" its just a pure fun box which is great when people come round or you need to kill a few hours, handy when you're snowed in and you don't want the girl friend in your ear all day.

We get the same tired arguments every time - so I may as well chip in :p

Exclusives. To have a PC/360/PS3/Wii only means you're guaranteed to miss out on the majority of the best games of this generation. Pick your poison or get them all. Seeing as time is my problem, I went for the latter.

Yes, a PC can output to a TV. I did it for years. Is it the same or as convenient as with a console? No, which is why I don't do it anymore. Some people may not mind.

Convenience. Some people like to tinker and tweak and the power to customise. Some want to push the start button and be done with it. I apprecaite both types of gaming greatly.

Mouse vs Keyboard. Depends on the game, even with fps. Let's not forget the Wiimote - throughout playing the Metroid Prime remakes it often struck me how much more suited and enjoyable it was using a Wiimote/nunchuck to navigate and platform around than using a m&k. On the other hand, i've been involved in competitive PC gaming at a decent level for years and wouldn't dream of anything other than a mouse for Q3/RTCW/ET/TFC/TF2. Halo is better with a pad and Golden Eye would have sucked with a mouse. Put that in your pipe, fanboys :D

Expense. 'you need an expensive HDTV for the consoles', 'my 386 with voodoo card runs games as well as a PS3'. Do we really have to dignify these obviously crappy arguments? :p

Graphics! PC games still blow me away technically - in an uncanny valley kinda way. Aesthetically, flagship console games are streets ahead - although the lower resolution and sometimes muddy textures can grate.

Online gaming. The PC is king! But the 360 and PS3 do a good job.

Party gaming. Consoles obviously have the upper hand here!

I have a PS3 and a recently bought Xbox 360 w/Kinect. I also have a very decent gaming PC. The way it breaks down is this:

- PS3: Bluray playback, IPlayer and PS3 Exclusives (Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid 4 etc.) for gaming, as well as free online MP if I want it;

- Xbox 360: Family fun with Kinect (daughter/missus enjoy it a lot), and Xbox 360 Exclusives[ (Halo, Gears of War etc.) for gaming, also for console-only releases it seems to have an edge over the PS3 in general, as well as Xbox Live (I do not use it but by all accounts it is supposed to be an excellent service).

- PC: Pretty much any multi-format release I will buy on the PC for superior graphics and greater control of the game settings. For FPS its a no brainer - normal aiming with mouse/keyboard, more mature community, higher skill levels, longevity through mods for certain games. Also in general a huge library of older games, easily available for digital download through services like Steam, and superior multi-tasking capability (word processing, browsing, media playback, media encoding etc.)

Occasionally I will stream media (photos) to the X360 or PS3. However, I have a dedicated media player for movies and DVDs already, so I don't really make use of this functionality (Note: PS3 Media Server is a great option for those who do not have a dedicated media device, and works on both consoles).

Each option has certain strengths and weaknesses. I don't believe in any one option being 'superior' to another because there are a range of different benefits depending on the purchase (Xbox Live for example, or Kinect, or Bluray on PS3)...BUT....well, if I were to be really honest, I would say that the PC tramples the consoles on everything but price. Still, I guess the answer here is that whatever you buy, you are onto a winner (just to varying degrees of "win" depending on what you want out of it).
