PC/Windows Recovery Problems

My family PC (a pre-packaged e-machine running Windows XP) crashed majorly a few days ago, it froze in Windows and when it was restarted it just said "No Operating System Found" on a black screen. This was completely out of the blue and I've no idea what caused it.

So today, I've finally accepted to re-format and lose all the data I had on it. I put the supplied recovery disk in and it says you will lose everything, I type 'Y' (for yes) then it just throws up some errors about Symantec Ghost, spits the CD out and the thing reboots after 1/2 a second.

Now on startup, it says

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

I take it it means an XP disc, which I don't have as it only came with the recovery disks which now it appears don't work.

So what do I do next?

You could try downloading an ISO of Windows XP - which AFAIK, is legal provided you have a legal CD key - and using that instead of your recovery disk.
